Phase two of attenion whoring: The Aftermath

Get drunk :
1) you will sleep very well after
2) the hangover will remind you that you're still alive
3) you might have fun

See a therapist or a psychiatrist. While this may pass on its own it also may not and it is better to get it checked out before it gets worse. If you let it simmer then you may have more problems down the line.

I also had a very scary incident on a plane... ours almost had a head on collision while attempting to land (control tower screw-up). So I know what it feels like to be shaken, very hard. You might be happy to know it passes. Just give it a few days and you'll be right as rain. :)

You know it could be something as simple as lingering adrenaline. I hear that after such an event the effects can last for days--even weeks.

I think running off to the nearest shrink might be putting the horse before the cart and open a whole other can 'o worms.

Exactly. Give it a couple of weeks before seeing a professional.

Wouldn't leave it as long as two weeks. A few days following Jadzia's de-stress regime and then see how things are.

Definitely see a professional therapist as quickly as possible. Then you have documentation when you sue the airline for mental anguish. :D

Having had a handful of death brushes myself, I've found that walking through the Blue Hills and/or some comforting attention from a friendly opposite sexer are both helpful. I've also found that there comes a certain exhilaration with knowing that you've beaten death this time.

But if you are seriously experiencing symptoms of PTSD, it would certainly be a good idea to talk to a professional sooner rather than later.

Yep. PTSD actually depends, in part, on how long its been since the incident. It's only PSTD if its lasted for more than a month. If it's been between two days and one month, it's Acute Stress Disorder. If you're getting the symptoms within two days of the incident, it's so normal they didn't even bother giving a name to that span. In most cases, ASD does last long enough to become PTSD, so I'm not saying you should just ride it out on your own. Quite the opposite, in fact.

You're taking care this a lot quicker than most people do. It's best to nip it in the bud.

Now that the adrenaline and shock have worn off I'm sort of suck with the realization of what actually happened. Should I talk to someone or what?

If you're serious about this, the literature is actually kind of controversial in how soon after a traumatic incident to start stuff like debriefing, in terms of trying to achieve the best long-term outcome.

Take advice from your primary care physician, and if you see a specialist in this sort of stuff, check their credentials/experience, specifically in this field.

Alternatively, console yourself with a looped reruns of yourself & Campbell Brown. :D

Watch "Final Destination" as many times as it takes you to realize that...YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DIE ON THAT PLANE!

Or watch one of the crappy sequels.

It might also help if you did something new or intersting you have been meaning to do but never got around to it (with reason) either by yourself or with friends and/or family.

But yes, seek support/help in RL, rather than in here.

You may find a mixture of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills to be beneficial. Wash them down with a tall glass of rye, just to be certain.

Sometimes I wish people didn't actually know I'm a shrink, so I could say stuff like this in these kind of threads. :techman:
