I thought this was pretty neat. Someone posted the original run of Star Trek's "Space Seed" and its commercials. The video is more about the commercials then the show, but I thought some fans might get a kick of seeing the advertisements that helped bring Star Trek on the air :)

That is a sweet find! :techman:

I still have TNG first season and some of season 2 and 3 at home in Winnipeg from when they were first on..and like a good fan back then I'd pause the tape to remove commercials.
Now I wish I hadn't done that!

That's kind of cool. I wonder what the source is (kinoscope?). I actually remember that Polaroid ad...because of the dog! And that Viceroy cigarette ad...I guess It's okay to smoke right next to a gas pipeline, hmm? Smoking is awesome! Too bad they didn't let the Enterprise crew smoke.

Somewhere on this BBS there's a pic of smoke from De Kelley's cig placed off camera but not far enough. I think it's when operating on Sarek.

Oh, that is wonderful! Thanks!!!

I'm definitely geezin', to be so nostalgic for network commercials...

The "Geritol" commercial is great - the stuff certainly made people feel better, as (in those days at least) a significant portion of it was alcohol.

That's the only way I could get through an hour of "Lawence Welk"!

Thank you! Terrific, but bittersweet. I want to live then.

I don't smoke myself, but I remember seeing commercials for cigerrates back in the 80's, I think sometime after that they banned commercials for cigerrates or something. (At least regular commercials, I know you can still see name brands in some movies and tv shows)

Sorry, Trek fans, you can douse yourself in Aqua Velva, but you still ain't getting a date for the prom. :(

From a Wikipedia entry on the subject of cigarette advertising on American (USA) TV:
In April 1970, Congress passed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banning the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio starting on January 2, 1971. [2] The Virginia Slims brand was the last commercial shown, with "a 60-second revue from flapper to Female Lib", shown at 11:59 p.m. on January 1 during a break on The Tonight Show.[31]
Smokeless tobacco ads, on the other hand, remained on the air until a ban took effect on August 28, 1986.[32]

I have an early 60s commercial of the Flintstones advertising Winston cigarettes. It is horribly, horribly wrong.

Hey, that reminds me -- there is a connection between Winston's jingle and the original TOS opening monologue, seriously.

The jingle went, "Winston tastes good like a [clap clap] cigarette should. [It really is catchy, too. Maybe Don Draper wrote it.]

Anybody else know the actual connection?

What a hoot! i just pray i can now get that Viceroy jingle out of my head!

I know next time I'm out welding a petroleum-caked pipeline I'm gonna light up a 'Roy. If they make them anymore that is. Wasn't that an old man cigarette even in the 60s?

It's wonderful; thanks! I hadn't thought about Super Shell with Platformate and those hilarious road "tests" in 40 years probably. I think we bought one of those RCA color console TV's, too. The Pepsi jingle still sounds good; and that Aqua Velva one --. Thanks.

I just revisited my childhood. Great link darkshadow0001, thanks for sharing it!

I like things about history for some reason, I just happened to fine this video by chance. I was looking for Star Trek stuff and this showed up. I could only imagine what it was like to live in the 60's... I was born in 1975 so I missed it :)
