Kirk's Brother and Nephew

Iff Star Trek XI's Kelvin scene is in the TOS timeline we are familiar with, is there a quasi-canonical explanation for where James T. Kirk's bro ( nephew) came from? Later marriage/liaison of Winona? Previous marriage/liaison of James T. Kirk's father?

Sam is probably a full brother considering how much he looks like James. He was probably on Earth (or the Tarsus IV colony) with relatives because a starship is no place for children during this time period.

There was much said about the kid, "Johnny" that Kirk drives past in Iowa being brother Sam. Presumably running away from home and new step-dad. However, as I understand it, that was written out before filming. I'm sure someone can correct me on the particulars.

That's true, Johnny was supposed to be Sam, but when the scene establishing who he was and why he was running away was cut, the audio was overdubbed Johnny. I believe the scene was filmed though. It might be on the DVD.

In any case, Sam in TOS was not stated to be either older or younger than Jim, so while he probably was a "straightforward" child of George and Winona there, he could be Jim's kid brother there and in STXI, and possibly born of George's frozen leftovers and Winona... Or he could be Jim's twin, overlooked by the paramedics initially but born a few minutes or hours after Jim. ;)

I always thought of Sam as older. Consider that George Samuel was named after his father, which is common for a Firstborn. Also consider that George Samuel was married and had three childern by the time of "Operation: Annihilate," and one of them, Peter, was a teenager. I think it's safe to sday he was older and therefore should still exist in the alternate timeline.

That'd probably be preferable in every way. Even if STXI creates the general impression that James Tiberius was George and Winona's firstborn, it's never explicit in the movie, now is it?

Many novels play it that way, too. The good old Enterprise: the First Adventure was the first, probably, but The Last Roundup by Christine Golden is quite clear about George Samuel being the older brother, even giving a birthdate.

I'm quite okay with STXI skipping these details of Kirk's life and times, as long as there aren't outright contradictions. I'd be happier with learning more about "our" Kirk's family, though. That's something that unfortunately isn't possible in the new timeline. Orphaned heroes are so booooooooring...

If someone considers the novelization to be quasi-canonical, George played a big part in the story. He's the reason Jim T. was driving the Corvette.

George, Jr., and Jim T. are full brothers, George being the elder. George, Jr., and the stepdad don't get along and fight frequently; the car belonged to George, Sr., and only passed to the stepdad through marriage.

Jim T. is a good boy, though, and gets along with the stepdad. He's always washing and waxing the Corvette. But that day, something snaps. George and the stepdad have a major falling-out, and George leaves home. He's the one walking along the dirt road.

Jim T. completely dotes on George, Jr., and doesn't want to live there anymore, if George, Jr., isn't around. So he makes an impulsive decision to run away in the car. In fact, for a brief moment before jumping out of the car, he flirts with the idea of not living anymore at all.

His life isn't what it could be. But he does jump out before the Corvette crashes into the quarry. I like the story with George, Jr., in it. It makes sense in regard to the car and their lives.
