Civilization IV

Anyone here play Civilization IV?

I love it. The sense of achievement when you have a growing empire and, even more so, when you conquer another's, is unreal, ha.

I used to play it. Never loved the military aspect of those games though ... I've always won by being the most advanced and the richest civilization.

For those of you that are big CIV fans, you'll want to check out this Civilization site. It's excellent and a really good source of information on all the CIV games in the series.

And yes, I do play the game a lot. My style is usually playing a financial leader, keeping a large enough military that my military ranking is high enough that the computer civs don't declare war on me, and try to win with a cultural or spaceship victory. The military aspect of CIV IV doesn't appeal to me, building a large thriving civ does.

Spider, are you a member of CFC? I used to post there every so often (although not anymore).

I'm still trying to get a game started if people are interested. Pitboss works the best if we can find a host, otherwise I assume Play by e-mail games are functional for Civ4 (I usually only play with Civ3 PBEM).

I've never played a multiplayer game against humans. In fact, my whole experience is beating the game, not humans. I'm not sure my style would do well in beating other humans. What I've heard in those games, and seen discussed on the Civ boards, is that it's pretty cut throat and involves a lot of war, which I'm not very experienced at (believe it or not).

I play peacefull Civ, which is why I've never played at the really high levels which will require you to go to war.

Yeah, you can't get by in a multiplayer game without war. The game pretty much ends when everyone is conquered (or a domination victory is secured).

I like it since it makes diplomacy more realistic, plus it's a different type of competition. The skills in single player still work best (no amount of diplomacy overcomes poor resource management, etc). But it would just be a fun game, so it wouldn't be all that cut throat.

I like Civ IV but I'm very variable as to my attitude towards 'difficult' gaming, and tend to play at the lower end of the difficulty settings. I think mostly because I don't devote the time to learning how to play better.

Alidar Jarok, to answer your question about CFC, yes I do have an account there. I've made exactly 34 posts since 2006. I use the site as a source of information rather than a place to post.

Ditto.

I also prefer the military aspect of the game now, as opposed to the enlightened route to victory (which if anything is a bonus), if the civ I choose is right. :bolian:

One of the nice things about Civ IV is the multiple paths to victory, you can play as a war monger or very peaceably and win either way. :)

Only problem is on the easiest levels I usually end up winning the game in a different manner to the intended way e.g. cultural instead of conquest, domination instead of spaceship, 2050 victory instead of everything else... :p

I tried for a Conquest and then a Diplomatic victory, but ended up with a Spaceship victory instead. I got ranked as Winston Churchill so I'm not angry ;).

The problem is that in order to win any of those victories you have to build up a huge military to stop your neighbours from invading you. I normally end up pumping so much money into building an army I have no intention of using that I just end up using it and taking over any empire I can reach via land. I only go for one of the "peaceful" victories if I've taken out everyone else on my continent and I don't want to go through all the trouble of a cross-ocean invasion.

I almost got a conquest victory, I conquered my whole continent (50% of the planet) and 10% of the other one. And I had a major cross-sea invasion of my most powerful rival over there, I didn't conquer him or have him capitulate but I took his capital and used it as a launching point for all my Tactical Nukes (I outlawed making more before I got to ICBMs) and nukes all his core cities. Put him from near the top of the list to the lower-middle.

It wasn't from having a massive army, just a medium sized one with the best tech (I was always around an age ahead of my enemies) and lots of artillery.

ow exactly do you activate Sid Meiers barbarian civilization?!?
I know you have to edit a file, but i can't find the instructions on civfanatics...

There is a Civ IV Scenario where you play as the barbarians, is that what you're asking?

Thats a kin to playing as the Bankrupt Assiasin in X:3. Interesting for awhile, but damn hard if you actually want to do something.

Another X Universe fanatic! :bolian: You tried Terran Conflict yet?

Anyway, I did have a go at the Barbarians mod that came with Civ 4: Warlords. It is actually very hard, as all the other civs start off with cities and can therefore research technologies, while you can only plunder and buy units at first. Eventually, the other civs will out-tech you, making winning extremely difficult.

I've spent too much of my life in X, currently my soul was sold to Anno. In TC I've done everything I think I want to try to do. I have the PHQ and HUB so I'm wiaitng for XTC to do their thing.
