Why is Neelix always so happy go lucky?

I really liked Neelix. Sure he had annoying tendencies, but at least he tried to make things better for the Voyager crew..and he made an effort to cook for the crew so they wouldn't have to use replicators all the time. But I wouldn't have wanted him to wake me up in the mornings..I would have told him to "buzz off" cause I'm not a morning person by any means!
I do agree, however, that he was a bit insecure on Voyager. In the beginning, he was always jealous of Kes being with any other man..so he and Tom Paris started going at it. Although it got tedious after a while, I did like the Paris/Kes/Neelix triangle. And I agree, both "Fair Trade" and "Mortal Coil" are really good Neelix episodes. Another good episode is "Elogium". :)

I agree with most of what you have written. Neelix could be annoying and his over-the-top cheerful attitude may have been a sign of some deeper problem caused by traumatic events in the past, the same for his over-protection and jealousy when it came to Kes.

The Paris/Kes/Neelix triangle was good and could have been better used, especially when it came to ending the Kes/Neelix relationship instead of that clumsy written end of it in "Warlord".

As for episodes, I didn't like "Mortal Coil", that episode was horrible and "Elogium" was one of the weaker episodes of season 1. But "Fair Trade" was great and so were also "Jetrel" (which I consider as the best Neelix episode) and "Investigations".

By the way, guess which my current favorite series is? It has something to do with your avatar! :techman:

I know there are prolly deeper meanings to his cheerfullness.. but he is the one character I really cant stand.

I didn't care for the character my first time through. But mostly because of a "starships should only have crew" syndrome. On my second viewing, I like him. His character is one I'd want on my side. He can be inept, but he will keep trying and will guard your back even if it literally kills him. And he wasn't ALWAYS cheerful. (but no, I wouldn't want him to wake me either)

I like Mortal Coil a lot. Only the "nanoprobes saves the day" part was a little so and so for me. But overall, great Neelix episode. Fair Trade - great one as well. Jetrel - okay. Investigations - one of my all time Voyager favs.

Rise - I thought I didn't like this episode, but I watched it recently and it was way better than I remembered it. Riddles - another my all time favs.

Overall it seems that I rather like Neelix episodes. Also Once Upon A Time, where he has relatively big role in, is one of my all time favorite Voyager episodes. :)

Maybe he was hoarding some Talaxian herb that Kes grew for him in the airponics bay.

He was annoying, but, then, he was supposed to be annoying.

And maybe he had three penises and knew he could keep all the ladies happy,:devil:. I don't know but he did iritate the fuck out of me.
Ethan Phillips was far better at playing Ferregi.

Finally, someone else online that likes "Once Upon A Time" as much as I do. :)

I think it's a great ep. where Neelix finally reveals the tragic life behind the happy mask. My two favorite scenes are 1) when he's praying to his sister for guidance. 2) when he freaks out on the bridge in front of Janeway.

However, I've always wondered if Harry Kim's comment about how ugly Flotter was is a part of the script or was it add libbed?

Lynx, I didn't know you didn't like "Mortal Coil". Why?

I absolutely love "Once Upon A Time". It never gets old for me. There are many great scenes in the episode, but one of the most touching one for me is the moment when Tuvok talks to Samantha in the Delta Flyer. Damn fine Tuvok scene if you ask me and it makes me almost cry everytime I see it. *snif*

Great concept for an episode, if you ask me. To tell it how a little girl grows up on a starship. :)

Green's review of the episode is one I agree with (the analysis part of it below fifth paragraph). http://www.treknation.com/reviews/voy/once_upon_a_time.shtml

Lynx, I didn't know you didn't like "Mortal Coil". Why?

Because it's one of those episodes where Braga is running his militant atheist propaganda down our throats.

It's a cruel episode. Neelix's hope of seeing his loved ones again are crushed and the whole episode is sort of "see, there's no afterlife".

We also have another of those episodes where Super-Seven saves the day by using her Borg probes, Borg knowledge, Borg technology or whatsoever, this time to revive people from death. It was too much of that "superhero solutions" in many of the season 4-7 episodes.

Duh, silly me.

I forgot you're not to keen on stories dealing with death.

So to summarize: "Waaah, the big bad atheist was mean to him!" Got it. Militant athiest propaganda? What a crock.

I never found Neelix annoying. "Mortal Coil" was my favorite episode of his. It showed he did have a deeper, darker side to him that he probably kept buried at all times. You don't just forget about losing your family and home in a war. He just kept it as far down as possible, distracting himself with things like Kes and cooking. Here, we get to see some of the bitter side of him. I wish we had seen this more.

Not only that but Athiest and those who are religious have that same questions about is there really anything after death. I think "Mortal Coil" deals with it well by leaving what you believe awaits up to you the viewer. While I do understand why Lynx feels how he does, I don't believe militant Athiest propaganda plays into it. Questioning if there is a God and/or afterlife or absense there of has always been touched upon in Trek.

Exactly. It's left open to interpretation both for Neelix and the viewer. I thought it was handled very well.

Plus IMO, if it was pro-Athist other characters wouldn't have expressed their ideas or beliefs be they pro or con.

I find it hilarious for someone to get on Berman as some evil-doer athiest when Gene Roddenberry was quite anti-religion. He was a humanist.
