Gay couple detained near MORMAN plaza

Well, kudos to them as they handled it better than I would have. If a church security guard tried to handcuff me, I'd have punched him out and would probably be facing an assault charge, which I'd fight to the bitter end. Since when can anyone but a cop handcuff you? Is there some sort of strange law in Utah that I don't know about?

That said, the couple should have left the grounds when they were asked as it is private property.

More than likely the local government is also composed mostly of Mormons, which means they'll look past it.

*$#&*% Joseph Smith.

Good job by the security officers as far as I can see. They were held to the same standard as everyone else and maybe they'll think twice next time.

I doubt that they were held to the same standards as everyone else unless it can be proven that the security guards had previously asked ahetrosexualto leave when he or she kissed someone on the cheek.

I think the onus is on the offenders to prove they were treated unfairly. Regardless, hopefully they learned their lesson and it doesn't happen again.

With some golden plated underwear.

I hope next time they have sex, right there on the steps. I know I'd laugh.

So you advocate performing an indecent act on private property... as a way to "stick" it to a church whos politics you don't agree with?

You know it's fine to just say "I don't believe in God, church or organized religion." You don't have to heap on the hatred... Doing so makes you no different that which you scorn.

The lesson is that some deluded people believe that a kissing someone on the cheek is a sexual act.

If the church starts nuking ya'll from orbit don't come crying to me. I'll be in the basement with my Church Approved Survival Supplies (now with MOAR PEAS).

Regardless, hopefully they learned their lesson and it doesn't happen again.
What lesson is that?

It seems that there was kiss-in at the Plaza concerned following the news of the arrest.
Gee, TLS, It seems, rather, that their supporters are out to teach the place in question a lesson of their own.

The lesson that if you are private property you respect the guidelines. Otherwise you leave or get arrested.

The "kiss-in" was amusing though. Public property. No problem.

They were passing through private property, from what I read, when one kissed the other on the cheek. The security officer decided to be an asshole and stop them. He could've just let them continue on their way - soon they'd have been gone.

And no, you only get arrested if you're submissive enough to think a security guard has any authority or right to lay hands on you without consequence. That, or you have a desire to become a martyr.

Actually, Plec, I'm a devout Christian. I don't hate these people, I don't dislike these people, but they do need serious cranial rectal inversion surgery, STAT. An on site security guard arrested them for kissing because they are gay. It was a kiss on the cheek. The indecent act was what happened to the gay couple, not the other way around.

They were ON private property. You can nuance it any way you want though. And apparently he had the authority to arrest them. If not, that will come out, no?

Martyr? I didn't know their lives had been put in danger.

Mormon. If you are going to bash someone's faith spell it right otherwise you look like an uninformed idiot with a hate-axe to grind. ;)
Fairly sneaky, but I see you. No trying to sneak Flaming past the Mods, please. ;)

As for the Topic, I think the guys in question were publicity hounds and the Mormon Church, like many others, needs to join the 21st Century.

J, more likely they did this on purpose. They had to know it wouldn't go ove all that well on church property.

They were ON private property.
Passing through, and stopped to kiss. They would have just kept walking if the security guard hadn't decided to make an issue out of it. I agree that by staying to argue after he told them to leave they WERE trespassing, and thus subject to lawful arrest BY THE POLICE. What they should've done was make out all the way to the property line and then stood there, making out, while flipping him the bird.

And apparently he had the authority to arrest them.
No, he didn't. The police who later arrived did. What HE did was put them in handcuffs, something no security guard is allowed to do. They are private citizens with no official authority whatsoever, and should be resisted when they step outside their authority.

Martyr? I didn't know their lives had been put in danger.
More than one way to be a martyr. Hell, Rosa Parks was a martyr.
