The End of Outpost Gallifrey

I tried to register at the forum there two times, but didn't got any activation emails. After that I gave up; couldn't see if it was worth it anyway. Due to that, I didn't feel the need to visit the site itself, either; they didn't seem very welcome to visitors.

I liked the reviews section, and in the forums after an episode I'd peruse the rants and raves and bloopers threads.

I found it to be a very cliquey forum, it didn't give a very good impression for new members.

Plus one of the moderators appeared to have an attitude problem. From what I gather, they were only a moderator because they were a personal friend of the guy who owned the forum.

I was a member before the new series even began and I'd discuss the novels in the forum. Good times but after the new series started the whole forum became... weird, y'know?

Wasn't the monster from Love & Monsters based on one of the posters there?

No, the monster in that episode was designed by a kid for a competition on a television show called Blue Peter.

Yes the monster was designed by a kid, but his personality and place in the story was supposed to represent the fanatical end of fandom. The rest of LINDA were friends because of the Doctor but they had other interests, and eventually started talking about things other than Doctor Who- Then Peter Kay comes in and says no we're only talking about Dr Who now, and basically takes over.

Yeah, that site was the epitome of the "fanatic" part of "fan". They mostly do a great disservice to Doctor Who fandom worldwide by keeping company with such a sad, pathetic forum of psychopaths. Good riddance, I say...

At least they weren't all in lockstep over something being great, I did appreciate that.

Certainly. However, many of them were in lockstep about everything being wrong...

As always, it was the vocal minority that gave it a bad name. Not everyone there was like that.

As for "before it goes" - it was scheduled to close on July 31st but actually did so on July 5th, so you're too late...

OG was no better or worse than a place like the TrekBBS. I tended to stick to the books, audios, and magazine forums, and I always enjoyed myself. It will be missed.

Yeah, but if you ventured out of there there's a solid chance you might die in one of the other forums.

I think that is a gross generalisation. The vast majority of posters there were well behaved, considerate individuals much like most of the posters here.

It's the loud mouthed minority who tended to ruin it in some of the sections of the forum but with over 40,000 members you're always going to get a few idiots. I've seen the same here in the past (not so much these days but then I don't venture out of the Who sub-forum much any more).

I will miss it but the spirit is being carried on in Gallifrey Base, which I at least, think is a damn good thing.
