UFP Anthem

Rush Limborg

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I posted this in "Captain's Lounge", but no one picked it up.

OKAY...considering the few lines of music we heard of the UFP Anthem (in "Take Me Out To The Holosuite" (DS9)), what say we all try to write lyrics to the song?

Make it stirring. Make it inspiring. Make it...patriotic!

It just so happens that I have the original version of the lyrics as written by Jonathan Archer:

Among the stars
We all join hands
Brothers in harmony
Unlike those fucking Vulcans

Then it goes on about how aliens suck for a while. Talk about a faux pas.

Well, just imagine what the 'other' Archer would have written.

But then, if the Imperial anthem is this, it would need no lyrics!

Rush...this may be my personal opinion, but I don't think the song HAS lyrics. Somehow I think it's there to be nice, but not to really stir up patriotism. Because patriotism would equal nationalism in their book and that's what Cardassians do. Noooooooo, can't have THAT...

(Sorry...I've been cynical lately. I'm sure you understand.)

I must admit, I wrote a set of words to include in a forthcoming fanfic on the grounds that an anthem without words is generally meaningless (IMHO) but anyhoo:

Verse 1

Lift up your voices, Loud and strong,
Banish injustice, Conquer all wrongs,
Join with our bretheren from star to star,
United we stand the Federation

Verse 2

Hope and freedom, free from strife,
Cherish equality, in every life,
Striving in fellowship, heed now these words,
In peace we will thrive, the Federation.

Howzat??

Agreed with this(are not all anthems nationalistic anyway;)) for the very good reason that the Cardassian interstellar anthem, 'Cardassia forever' would have lyrics just for the simple reason that Cardassians love to talk!

'sides you don't need to apologise for your cynicism, it's expected from a citizen of Cardassia

I think it unlikely that the Federation Anthem has any lyrics. Whose language would it be in? English, Vulcan, Andorian, Tellarite, Mandarin, Spanish?

Hey, the Colonial Anthem (from Battlestar Galactica) didn't have lyrics - and all of those people are human. So not having lyrics is not out of the question for the Federation.

That was awesome. You earned a cookie. :bolian:

Or matriotic, depending on the traditions of your world and its early cultures ;). Even a discussion of what the lyrics should imply might run aground upon 150 different cultural perceptions, regardless of the common cause and beliefs that unite them in the Federation.

What if, say, a large number of Tellarites have a religious objection to use of the word "unity" in an official anthem (implies one voice where many, competing arguments must be heard) but Efrosians require it's presence in any song conveying social belief systems (or else it fails to tie each individual's song into the whole and implies chaos?). What if Deltans decide sex should be mentioned and Arbazan object most strongly? What if putting words to music in general is taboo to Saurians yet mandatory to Denobulans? ;)

We could go on for days. :)

^ Federation standard :)

Hm. "Federation Standard" sounds good for starship hulls and the like, but why would the UFP put something that's supposed to be inspirational to all of its citizens into a language they do not share?

Shouldn't the Anthem be the most inclusive musical composition possible -- and therefore be on that either lacks official lyrics, or which has official lyrics in every single Federation language?

And it's not like national anthems have to have lyrics. "La Marcha Real" does not, nor does "Državna himna Bosne i Hercegovine" (Bosnia and Herzegovina), nor does the Anthem of Europe.

I answered to your thread in the captain's lounge:
We a-are theeeee Federatioooon.
We are so gre-e-eat!
Tralalalaaaaa!
And from here on I can't remember the teeeext!
So I just siiing some random craaap!
Yooo-ooo-ghurt is reeal tasty!
Green curtains a-are bluuuue!
Da!Da!
A mo-onkey is not a chi-icken!
Without the exclusive spare paaarts!

Sing it all we will, there's Earth and then there's Trill,
there's Betazed and Cait and Delta IV.
There's a whole big host of worlds, and all you boys and girls,
Come down and swing your bodies on the floor!

Denobula and Nasat, and that's not nearly all,
There's Sauria and Bolarus and Mars.
Come and sing it with us, we're gonna have a ball
So sing it with me all across the stars!

There's Vulcan! There's Andor!
We sing with utmost candor!
There's Tellar! And Rigel!
Call us meek and that is libel!
There's Efros, and Grazer,
We'll sing and we'll amaze ya!

Feddddderation!
We're the Feddddderation!

Tiburon is never wrong, so come and have a go!
Draylax and Evora know the score!
The party never ends when you're on Pandril in the snow,
That's only twenty, we've got dozens more!

Ahem. Moving on...

(if anyone wants to pick it up, verse two clearly begins "We'll sing our way to glory, on old Alpha Centauri, Napea and Luna are in too...) Okay, i've really gotta stop this.

Now that I think about, I think the Federation and its stubborn, imperialistic Starfleet should just change its anthem to "Never Gonna Give You Up" and be done with it.

Then any time a Cardie or Rommie gets out of line they can just Rick Roll 'em.

Or:

We're human,
We're human,
Come on sing along!

We're human,
We're human,
Really, so are you!

We're human,
We're human,
If we repeat it long enough,

We're human,
We're human,
Maybe it'll be true!
