What is the general consensus on the New Frontier series?

While none of them have had a big effect on the universe, there have been references to things like the Selevian War, Thallonians, and Triexians. On the other hand, I don't think PAD has ever tied NF into the rest of the Trek Lit universe himself, pretty much any ties have been made by other authors.

PAD had the Excalibur-A and Mackenzie Calhoun show up in the TNG book, Before Dishonor. However, it can really only be considered a cameo appearance. Calhoun and co. show up for the ending and fight along side Picard and the Enterprise, and Calhoun chats with Picard at Janeway's memorial. But still...that ties in the NF crew with the TNG era trek-lit, quite nicely :)

Oh, I didn't realize that, I never got past the second or third chapter of the book.

The Excalibur-A?

For what achievements did they decide to give her an A lettering? Sounds like a fanfiction story where the fan tries to glorify his own creation because it was sooo cool to see the Enterprise-A in Star Trek 4. And it sort of takes away from that, because the Enterprise is now not the only ship that was honored this way.

I read the first four and stopped when a planet turned out to be an egg.

LOL, I've seen that in a Ducktales episode once.

The A lettering was given to the second Excalibur to appear in the NF series. After the Ambassador class ship was lost, a Galaxy-class ship was given the name Excalibur and the same registry # was kept.
If you had read the series up to that point, and had been a fan, the exploits of the previous books would probably have justified the keeping of the name.

While I did not give up on NF at that point, it was close. I guess my attempt to read all trek literature was what made me pick up the next few, but they got better.

As to your point, I thought the egg was very silly.

Interestingly enough in the book after that Calhoun and Shelby point out all the unbelieveable stuff from TOS as well as the fact that next to that a giant bird hatching out of a planet isn't that unbelieveable

I love New Frontier. I don't care what you all say. I think the Trek universe is big enough for some alternate interpretations, and I think PAD's storytelling hits a great blend between wacky and serious. It's a totally different balance from anyone else's for damn sure, and as Before Dishonor shows it doesn't blend well, but on its own hell yes I love it.

I agree and in that spirt New Frontier is actually closer to TOS that the 24th century stuff, I mean Calhoun is pretty much the 24th century version of Kirk, he even had a ship that looks like a Constitution-class well at least till it blew up and he got a Galaxy-class any way.

Plus the Excalibur took part in the Battle of Sector 001 against the Borg, was part of the Blockade used to expose the Romulan involvement with the Klingon Civil War, and was said to have has a long and distinguished history so that would be why it gets to keep the registration number.

Plus its also the replacement for the series main ship so of course they keep the registry except to add an A to it like they did with the Enterprise everytime one gets destroyed.

Used to love it, but it has gone steadily downhill since the time jump between Stone and Anvil and After the Fall.

It did seem to have more low points after that jump. I almost gave up, but I guess curiosity got me through it. I'll be annoyed if he dumps Soleta now, I like her.

I love it, it is my favorite book series. I have read them all. the pnly problem is the books are not frequent enough!!

^I like the fact that PAD writes all the books, as the tone seems to be the same from book to book (mostly), but for expediancy's sake, I wouldn't mind if one (or a few) of the wonderfully talented writers in the "trek bullpin" took a crack at Mac Calhoun and co. . Maybe it's just me, but then we may actually get at least one per year...
