Macross: Do You Remember Love? is more than a movie, it's an institution. It's been fansubbed more times than probably any anime in history. It's visually arresting to this day, despite being completed in 1984. To Japanese otaku and animators, it's a holy grail: an absolute high-water mark of both anime and the nerds that make it. It will never see a proper American release.

Cool, I have both versions on tape, I'll have to try and rewatch the Amercian version and see the Japanese version.

I saw a funsub version good movie, I have no idea why the hell Harmony Gold went with their crappier movie idea instead of dubbing this so that a proper dub or sub could be released in the US with SDF Macross, Macross II, and Macross Plus.

Wonderful movie, I still watch it from time to time. Version I've got is pretty crappy and the sub drops out for large chunks, but you know what that's part of the charm for me. Really wish Harmony Gold would go stick their heads up their ass and rot, so we could get a proper US release of these beauty.

Has anyone heard news about the proposed Robotech movie?

Part of me is hoping it'll be axed just like the live action Akira.

DYRL is a masterpiece, and that's not a title I'd usually give a compilation flick. Wish I could own a physical copy of the thing.

I think I liked the original show more The animation was top-notch though and I guess its considered the definitive version of Macross since all the shows following it base their stuff on DYRL rather than the series. I don't know about where this thing stands with the whole Harmony Gold licensing fiasco but I hope to see it released on blu-ray someday. Fat chance, I know

I think I liked the original show more The animation was top-notch though and I guess its considered the definitive version of Macross since all the shows following it base their stuff on DYRL rather than the series. I don't know about where this thing stands with the whole Harmony Gold licensing fiasco but I hope to see it released on blu-ray someday. Fat chance, I know

You'll just have to order a import of it from Japan-- same blu-ray region as the USA, so a good player is all you need. There was a rumor that they were goign to do a Japan release with either english sub or a english dub track, but I think that's all it was: rumors.

At least-- as I understand it-- HG got screwed as good at Big West (I think that's the right studio) did. HG can use the character names but not the designs and the ships-- hence the new designs in "Shadow Chronicles"; where as Big West can't release anything in the US that is related directly to the original Macross series. Macross II and Macross Plus somehow danced around this issue and got a US release.

The two Macross series I want the most remain unclaimed though, Zero and Frontier, which sucks though.

I want all of it in one giant glorious boxset filled with goodies and trinkets But yeah, the one I want the most is Frontier in blu-ray form. The fansubs all looked incredibly fuzzy and crappy. A shame for a show that had such amazing artwork

IMHO the 9 disc reboxed Animeigo set is a STEAL at $40.

If it's still available on the Robotech website do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Technically Do You Remember Love got a US release in the form of Clash of the Bionoids on VHS. Of course it was cut by 11 minutes--although while I remember the snips for graphic violence and nudity, 11 minutes suggests whole scenes might have been cut--and the English dub made Robotech seem like Shakespearean Theater.

Technically Do You Remember Love got a US release in the form of Clash of the Bionoids on VHS. Whoever was in charge of that needed to be neutered and then never allowed near another film EVER. I've seen COTB, ugh made my Macross fan soul hurt.

Yeah, but I think they had to negioate with HG to pull that off. And if the rumor mill is a litmus test, it wasn't a pleasent experience.

I had heard that Frontier was going to get a US dub (alternately both ADV and Funimation got mentioned), but I think this was just fan-press blue-sky talk nothing else.

Two of them in fact. The original version from Animego and then a superior remastered version of the show from ADV with cleaned up video and a dub.
