Seriously - that was almost unreadable.

I think younger people don't understand what MJ was to the last quarter of the twentieth century.

No, he wasn't just a singer and no, he wasn't just a dancer.

Like the Beatles, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson represents and encapsulates an era - an era that he actually created and defined. Forgetting the scandal of the last fifteen or so years, he was a BRILLIANT musician who changed contemporary music and forever left his stamp on modern popular culture.

I remember when he was a little kid with a cartoon show, and I don't think he was that brilliant and the changes he brought to popular music were not all for the better.

Old foggy here...move on already.

I'm sorry the kid is dead, but we really don't need full network coverage of his fricken funeral tomorrow.

Yes, he did some ver good stuff and made new inroads in music. Yes he was a cute talented youngster who went on to do some neat stuff. But yes, he also got weird.
Leave out the trial, he still got weird.

There is still no reason for the "state funeral" and wall to wall coverage.

Any bets on how soon we stop getting coverage AFTER Tuesday? I give it way too much coverage for a couple more months, depending upon the tox screens, 3-4 months.

I was soooooo happy when Sarah Palin resigned, because it meant there was actual real news coverage for the first time in a week.

I never liked the crotch-grab. Always looked wrong to me. But now everybody does it. Even normal guys out on the street. I mean :wtf:

Here in Britain, it now seems to be law for newsreaders to refer to Jackson as "The King of Pop" in all items about his death, will, legacy or funeral. Completely without irony or qualification, just stated as if it's a fact, whereas in fact it's an opinion, and it's really pissing me off. This is the same person who the press and media referred to as "wacko Jacko" for years. When he tried to deify himself live on stage during the 1996 Brit Awards, Jarvis Cocker became a national hero for bursting his balloon so hilariously. Suddenly, Jackson's dead and he's the best thing ever. Which he wasn't. I just think there should be some more impartial reporting and a bit of balance. Not sure if anyone's asked Jarvis for his opinion (though they seem to have asked everyone else, down to the lowest Z-list celebrity, whether they know Jacko or not.)

Ooh, you're using your mama's laptop again without permission. I'm gonna tell!

Oohh, good topic. I was just looking at CNN wondering if the mass media knows a lot of people have moved on.

Seriously... there's only so long one could grieve for a person who was not a member or your family or a friend. I didn't know him. If I did, maybe I'd feel differently.

Well, what exactly would constitute excessive news coverage?

It seems excessive to me--but then, I was never a fan.

And I imagine that, to his fans, the man made a greater difference in their lives than any of the people you mention

I once read the work of an 18th-century French philosophe named Helvetius...

(I know, this is a big leap I'm making here, but work with me)

...who compared society to the Solar System, and our impact on each other to gravity.

It's true that, in absolute terms, the Sun is far more massive than the Moon. Its gravity influences every body in the Solar System. The Moon and its gravity are trifling by comparison.

But it's also true that the Moon, while much smaller than the Sun, is also much closer to the Earth, and exerts a powerful, though highly local influence. It can even eclipse the Sun completely, under the right circumstances.

Truly great people, whose decisions and actions affect everyone, are like the Sun: important, but also distant. Someone like Michael Jackson, by contrast, is like the Moon. And the media frenzy surrounding his death would be like a Solar Eclipse.

Yes, the media does WAY OVER do things. Remember the swine flu? ;)

It's a little too much coverage for me, but if all the networks want to put on the memorial service it doesn't hurt me any. What do they normally show on Tuesday mornings anyway? Does it really matter if Price is Right gets preempted?

Personally, I think Sarah Palin is only slightly less of a self-manufactured freak show than Michael Jackson, but your defition of "actual real news" may vary.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the last good album Michael Jackson put out like 18 years ago, and he's really more famous now for being a weirdo than anything else?

I'm guessing you weren't around or don't remember the press coverage when John Lennon was murdered?

Same thing.
