Apparently, this whole thread count thing is a nonsense anyway, and a way for the major shops to scam you. The thread count can be inflated by their twisting together discarded, short, frayed, cotton yarn, which is of a lower quality. They then quadruple the count on that basis. After that, the workmanship and the way it is finished makes a great deal of difference. It is actually possible to have a lighter, stronger, smoother, cotton in a 180 count, and have it outstrip a supposed 1000 count in longevity and feel. This is because they might have used longer, superior quality yarn, which has been finished properly to stop it bobbling or wearing too quickly after multiple use and washes, and is then able to absorb and retain dyes better, too.
So really, the only way to tell is touch, a nice close-up look, and make a guess, then only time will tell. Unless you buy from a recognised reputable luxury dealer and leave an arm and a leg with them.

The best sheets I ever bought were actually made of bamboo. So much softer than any of the other cotton sheets! I found them at Target a couple years ago.
I actually bought new sheets a few days ago. They're cheap and crappy, but they're also new and clean, so they still feel awesome.
