I want an iPod Touch

I have never owned an iPod nor any other kind of MP3 thingy. I had never, in fact, downloaded music before until last week when I finally decided to use iTunes. I always just listened to CDs. However, I have finally discovered iTunes, and I think it is awesome.

As a result, I have finally decided that it is time to get an iPod. What do people recommend? I have a touchscreen phone already, and I like the way it works. I don't think I need anything with an obnoxious amount of memory, so I was thinking of getting the 16GB iPod Touch. It costs about the same as the 120GB iPod Classic, which is way more memory than I would know what to do with.

I'm also on vacation this week and getting bored, and when I'm bored, I tend to get impulsive and buy things I shouldn't. So if there was ever a time for me to buy it, it's now.

I have a 16GB touch, and I LOVE it! It's really amazing. Wherever you have wifi you can browse the web, log into your email, post at trekbbs.com, download new music. It's really an awesome device.

So, yes, if you're not going the iPhone route I'd recommend the 16 or 32 Touch. Make sure you get the second generation (labeled 2G).

Can you browse the internet right away, or do you need some kind of data plan for it?

It depends on if you have wifi, which i should mention is the ONLY way to get internet on the touch. So you'll be able to access anywhere there is free wifi, which many places now have.

The way everyone on here as been raving about the ipod touch lately, I too am convinced it must be the second coming and should have a piece of it myself. I hate it when I do that... :p

We got an iPod Touch with our wedding album last year and I didn't know anything about it so it took me awhile to discover how awesome it is. As others have mentioned, wifi is the only way to get internet on it.

I had never used an iPhone or Touch before, and I randomly decided to bring it with me to India. It automatically connected to the wifi at the place where we were staying and it was easy for me to figure out browsing, sending emails, even browsing TBBS and posting! But my fingers are tiny which helps. I dunno, it was kind of awesome to have something that size to just sit and listen to music or watch videos on, or to browse the internet without having to lug a laptop halfway across the world.

I'd get an iPhone if I could use Verizon on it.

Right out of the box bro, it's got wifi. Wherever you got wifi you're ready to rock.
That is phenomenal.

I've got WiFi at home, so that'll be fun to play around with. If I'm not at home, I can't see myself needing any other kind of connection besides WiFi.

Yeah, the "Post things that are Awesome" thread (or whatever it's called) is what turned me on to the idea in the first place.

And Kestra, I agree. If I didn't already have a cellphone plan that I was happy with, or if I could just switch my current plan over the the iPhone, I would gladly do it. I figure the iPod Touch is the next best thing. If nothing else, I can just tape my phone and Touch together.

I'd love to have a Touch, but it doesn't have enough space for all my music. I think I will wait and see if Apple makes a full-out netbook.

Before you drop close to 300 dollars on one of these gadgets, my advice would be to first take stock--not of what you would need this for, exactly, but rather how it would fit into your lifestyle, and when you would realistically make use of it.

For example: the ability to browse the web anywhere, anytime sounds good in theory--but when and how often will you want to browse the web, and yet not have access to a PC?

Similarly: being able to watch movies anywhere sounds great as well. But, realistically, when will you have time to watch a movie, and yet not have access to a real TV?

If, after taking stock, you find it fits with your lifestyle, then go for it, and enjoy!:techman:

But if you're anything like me, you may find that all you've got is a very expensive MP3 player, and an acute case of buyer's remorse.

RoJo, do you fly a lot? Some airlines have specialized websites that are tailored to a Touch (or iPhone), and will even e-mail you your boarding pass which you can show directly from its screen when you board...

There are often times at work when a question comes up (I bartend, so sometimes people will ask about random drinks that we don't have recipes for), and the only computer we have a 12-year old Dell with a dial-up modem (even though we also have WiFi in the building, so I don't know why they don't upgrade the frickin PC). I can see the Maps feature coming in handy when traveling, as well as the weather feature.

Its main function will be as an MP3 player, yes, but I can definitely see using the other features in my life.

I do not fly...ever. Well, I haven't since I was 8 anyway. Just never have any reason to. But that is really neat.

Well, then, what are you waiting for, man? The economy's not going to stimulate itself.
I have done so much for this frickin economy! In the last year, I have bought a PS3, a flat screen TV, about 80 billion DVDs, a bunch of workout equipment, a new MacBook...

Frankly, I don't know why I'm not broke.

Because you haven't bought an iPod Touch yet?

Now here's a question. What do I need if I want to play the iPod Touch through my car stereo? I know the older iPod can be played on certain FM frequencies, but I was never sure on how that works.

Now here's a question. What do I need if I want to play the iPod Touch through my car stereo? I know the older iPod can be played on certain FM frequencies, but I was never sure on how that works.

My car stereo has a digital input that I connect to my iPod in the glove compartment. I then can control the iPod through the stereo interface. It's quite seemless, and you don't lose sound quality this way like you would doing the FM route.

I shuffle my songs, and I have my own radio station!

So if your willing to spend a little extra money, it's a good way to go...

I'd prefer to go the less expensive route on that for now. Can I just buy a tuner at Walmart or something?

If you have a cassette player in your car a cassette adapter is a good option. Personally I have a mount that comes out of the cigarette lighter that holds the touch upright. It transmits the music in fm so you can tune it in on your car, it also charges at the same time. For something like that you'd probably have to order online I got mine for about $30 on Amazon, though I would imagine that Walmart (I still hate writing that, why did they change their name?!) has cassette adapters.
