Star Trek got a nice little boost from Tuesday, possibly from Transformers 2 sell-outs. It made about $686 more than last week and increased 30% from Tuesday. Trek had the best day-to-day change in the Top 10. Star Trek is now #53 on the all-time domestic list, unadjusted.

Transformers 2 opened with the largest Wednesday opening (beating HP5's $44 million), and the second-largest opening day in history (behind only Dark Knight's $67 million).

Trek's International Gross: $123,368,091
Global Gross: $365,431,275

I was expecting more of a decline from Transformers, but a little sellout boost is nice. Terminator has dropped out of sight now. I did not expect it to perform so poorly this summer (I say that, having originally planned to go see myself but still haven't made it and now probably never will).

Absolutely astounding... :)

It is fortuitous that Star Trek is a kissin' cousin to Transformers 2 in terms of genre, isn't it?

But had Star Trek been crap, this spillover wouldn't be happening either.

What would be ironic is if Transformers 2 experienced a drop after the initial excitement wears off, and people go back to Star Trek... one more time.

Wow.

$8 of that is from me! ;D

I asked the concessionist at the theatre what he thought of Transformers 2 and he said he liked it better than the first, oddly enough. I haven't decided if I'll go see it or not, as I had mixed feelings over the first movie, and the trailers lost me with all the toy robots. :p But I'll probably end up going to see The Proposal this weekend. I'm kind of due for a chick flick. Plus, I love Betty White. :D

At this point in 2002, was NEMESIS even in the Top 10 or 15 anymore? That movie dropped faster than an old man's balls in a sauna.

I'm curious to see if the bad buzz actually has any adverse effect on Transformers' overall box office take or not. Knowing general audiences, I would guess not, especially after its already-massive opening day haul, but I guess the coming weeks will tell. And hey, if Transformers is sold out and people decide to check out Star Trek instead... all the better. :)

Indeed...

The San Jose paper here has Star Trek advertised in a double-feature with Transformers 2 at one of the drive-ins... :)

Best-case scenario at this point is that Trek gets spillover this weekend, and then Transformers gets poor word of mouth and generates relatively few repeat viewings. That could mean a solid hold for Trek this weekend and a surprisingly fruitful fourth of July :)

I really, really don't understand why so many people are seeing Transformers 2. A critically derided sequel to a mediocre film, one with a pretty crappy trailer, based on a mildly popular 1980s cartoon series... why is this such a big deal?????

Apparently, a lot of people enjoyed the first movie. I don't quite get the appeal myself, but to each their own.
