Trek's chances at best picture just increased?

I definitely think it has a shot of being nominated... winning, never. And I LOVED the movie.

Totally agree.

Having it nominated would kick ass. But frankly, a Brazilian snuff film starring Gopher from LOVE BOAT would have a better chance of winning.

You don't really think it'll win best picture do you?! It was a great ride for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a popcorn flick. But best picture quality? No way!

If a historic, breakthrough movie like the original STAR WARS can't win Best Picture against a movie like ANNIE HALL in what was arguably the best-chance year for a sci-fi/fantasy/space movie to win Best Picture, TREK sure as hell won't stand a chance.

I couldn't believe it when I heard this on the news this morning, 10 best picture nominations. The first thing that crossed my mind was the possibility that Trek could be nominated. I doubt it though.

In any case, I'm glad they opened it up a bit. I was disappointed last year when movies like The Dark Knight and WALL*E were shunned from best picture and it still surprises me that Gran Torino wasn't nominated for anything.

I can't for the life of me remember if any sci-fi movie has ever been nominated, except in some kind of techinical acheivement award or something..

2001 was nominated for best director & best screenplay, but only won an art direction (or somesuch--too lazy to go look it up) award.

When I saw the online article (one source - http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ent...1943-10-movies----instead-of-the-current.html ), I just saw this as a marketing ploy by the Academy to help the studios draw in more money for their films. More nominees mean more films to promote as "Oscar-worthy" and more screens to get showings in front of the masses. Those already out of theatres will get re-releases, plus an extra promotional boost on the DVD market. Overall, it is a nice idea, but there is still only 1 winner.

However, ST09 getting nominated is a pipe dream.

Potential Nominees

ST09 is a great, fun movie, but I'm sorry it's not Oscar material, not by a long shot.

I am pretty happy with the expanded category, though. It's a smart move by the Academy, there have been too many beloved movies snubbed in the past.

I think the Oscars need to introduce a new category. I don't think Trek deserves to win in the Best Picture category, but it could certainly win Most Awesome Picture of the Year.

Look:

1) I'm an old time Star trek fan who saw the original series first run on NBC, and still thinks it's the best series in 'the franchise'.

2) I LOVED this new film and am very much looking forward to the sequel(s).

That said: There's no way in hell this film will even get nominated for 'Best Picture'; and even if I'm wrong, I would say even IF nominated it would never win. If Star Wars couldn't do it in 1978 (It was beat out by Annie Hall), Star Trek won't in 2010.

It could be nominated. Sometimes things change.

Yes, there's a separate award for animated films, but in a way, it's as much a technical award as any of the obvious ones, because it segregates the animated films and implies that, because they are animated, they couldn't possibly be considered "good," only well-done for their niche. After Wall*E's positive critical buzz last time, and even more positive buzz now for Up, it may finally be time for them to accept that an animated film can be as poignant, as nuanced and as entertaining as anything live-action. Especially when considering how much even 'live-action' films are now comprised of CGI, and not just genre films; the line is blurring between "animation" and "enhancement," with the main difference being whether the actors are flesh or bits.

Now, this would be fantastic. Up definitely deserves the nomination.

you people are the biggest bunch of pessimists I've ever met!! :p

I say it's gonna get a nomination. :techman:

talk to me next January.

I'm not entering the argument either way but...

Could someone please explain Why? they don't think it could win, and what movies have a better chance?
