wow! Has it not opened in India yet? Hopefully this will do something for the world-wide box office numbers!

There was the captain of the ill-fated ship that deployed a solar sail in STVI, but I'm unsure of his background.

Also, in Voyage Home, there is a captain of a ship that's been drained by the probe who sends a message that he's trying to rig a solar sail to get the ship underway. (oops, jinx with Captain Fine)

The actor is Indian (former tennis pro Vijay Amritraj) but the character name "Captain Joel Randolph" suggests a somewhat less exotic background.
There was an engineering officer Lt. Singh in "The Changeling" (TOS) but the actor playing him was Hawaiian. Another engineering-dept. Lt. Singh in TNG's "Lonely Among Us" was played by Kavi Raz, who was born in India but grew up in the UK.

Star Trek opened in India on June 5th. I'll see if I can get box office numbers for the two countries

Perhaps you miscomprehend how many people in India actually have money to spend on a movie. Over 42% of the Indian population now live under the global poverty line of $1.25 per day.
Well, somebody is seeing all those Bollywood pictures. They have a middle class roughly the size of the U.S. population.
I notice in that BOM list for those who were ragging on Mexico that Mexico did more Trek business than Brazil, which is a much bigger country.

I was debating on making a joke about this after seeing the thread title. There may be a billion people...with about 100,000 willing to spend the money on seeing the movie.
The box office numbers are not available yet (No idea why) but the movie did come out on the 5th otherwise I watched a completely different movie called "Star Trek"
There was a general strike between the movie producers and the multiplexes here and when it was over "Star Trek" was shown ahead of Wolverine, Terminator 4 and Angels and Demons because everyone expected this movie to do well
I haven't witnessed any chinese people talking about it. Star Trek: Enterprise has been subtitled in Chinese, but I've never heard anyone talking about it. Transformers was a huge hit there, interestingly enough.
There must of been a few other Indians in TOS...in backround, non speaking roles... but there must have been more!!
