Red Faction: Guerilla, any fun?

I'm sorry if this was posted before, but has anybody bought this game? If so does it live up to all the hype about the destructable environments?

I've read all sorts of reviews, but I want to hear from normal people who dont get paid for their opinion.

I'm thinking about buying it, but dont want to waste my money if it is crap.

You probably should have posted this in the new gaming forum, but there may already be a thread in there, not sure whether it was just another thread that went off topic.

I loved Red Faction: Guerilla. One of the few open world sandbox games to hold my attention the whole way through.
The destructible environments (just man made structures really) work great, although it has to be said the physics on them collapsing is a bit off, took out the entire set of supporting walls only for the whole building to be held up by a ladder, or pipe, but it sure is a lot of fun destroying buildings.
Personally I loved it.

I liked this game really well--for about a day, and then it got really repetitive very quickly. I realize to a certain extent, all video games have a certain degree of repetitiveness. But this one seems a little worse than usual.

It probably didn't help matters either that I'm playing it right on the heels of InFamous.

Red Faction shits on everything in the open world genre that isn't GTA 4.
Including GTA4, I think you meant...

I regard GTA 4 as the finest open world shootan/drivan experience ever crafted, so can assure you there was no mistake in my post. ;)

You and I must of been playing different games because I found GTA4 to be one of the most disappointed games I've ever played compared to the amount of hype it got, and a mediocre game at best, even compared to the PS2 GTA trilogy which I didn't love in the first place.

If you really want to check out RF:G, there's a demo available on XBox Live. Don't know about other platforms, though.

I experience with RFG went like this:

First hour: bloody dull. The destruction is very cool but makes the game feel like a gimmick with a shallow game pasted on top of it. Missions so far seem incredibly shallow ("go here, shoot that").

Second through fourth hours: getting much more used to the game, liberated a few sectors now, missions have gotten mildly more interesting. And, oddly, the destruction gimmick hasn't gotten old, it's instead gotten more awesome. It's an absolute blast beginning your assault on an EDF stronghold by finding the biggest truck you can and plowing through the middle of it, then getting out of your truck and throwing shit-loads of remote detonating bombs all around. Absolutely glorious chaos.

Last two or so hours:
great game! Story is meh. *Side* missions *do* get repetitive, but the story missions are marginally more interesting, if only for the story elements (but again, don't expect too much from the story). The last mission is awesome, though, as is the ending cutscene.

Great game. Multiplayer is a blast too. I'd pick it up!

Also: don't be afraid to turn the difficulty to casual. The game has massive difficulty spikes, and you can't believe how fun it is to cause epic chaos with a nearly invincible character (he's practically immortal on casual, and dies in an instant on medium).

I found that to be more or less the same for my experience. I did give up on those sidequests where you deliver the various cars to the safe houses fairly early on, though. I'm absolutely terrible at driving in games like this. Even the easier ones were taking me at least a couple of tries. :p

Luckily, the main missions got more interesting as some of the side missions started to become tedious. There's also plenty of side-missions that you can skip over the boring ones, and focus on the more fun ones and still complete the main story objectives. Personally, I loved all of the Heavy Metal missions, and blowing up buildings is just plain fun.

My biggest gripe about the game, and one that's still very minor, is the guerillas showing up when I was focusing more on morale for a given area. If they're going to be that stupid and terrible, and you have no control over when they show up their living or dying should have no effect on what you do in the game. I don't know how many times I was close to 100% only to lose a good 10 or so points because they huddle in a building that was 10% or so less, or get run over by reinforcements, etc. Luckily, knocking over a few signs and getting some killing sprees makes up the deficit pretty quickly.

That's a very minor complaint, as are most of the others. I'm not sure how much replay value this game will have, but it was a great experience. I still haven't checked out the multiplayer yet.
