Transparent Alluminium

No, he meant years to work it out as in it would take years to work it out without Scotty giving it to him in advance.
Scotty made it clear he needed something strong and only a certain thickness and that in the year they were in there was nothing that was strong enough without it being too thick.
Remember when Scotty and McCoy told that plexiglass guy what they needed the guy said they couldn't make plexiglass that strong so small which is precisely why Scotty gave him the information for transparent aluminium..

That's what I have a the beef with, he COULD have used a sheet of pure metal and it would have sufficed but he wanted it to be transparent which is why he had to invent Transparent Aluminium early.

If you're saying the tank they made in the BoP was made from transparent aluminum, you're wrong.

Scotty asked him how thick the existing plexiglas would need to be to hold back the water. The guy said how thick it would have to be, AND that they had it IN STOCK. That's the material they took back to the BoP and used to make the tank, NOT transparent aluminum.

Because it would take years to understand, they could not have manufactured transparent aluminum that quickly for Scotty to take and use.

Maybe Nichols/Plexicorp did invent Transparent Aluminum and Scott was just part of the closed time loop?

That's covered in the novelization. Scotty has the formula downloaded into Nichol's computer from the Starfleet computer banks in the Klingon bird of prey.

Also, did you notice, when Scotty manipulates the "quaint" keyboard, he never presses "Enter" until right at the end?

No maybe about it in the novelization. Scotty explicitly says Nichols was the inventor, and is surprised that McCoy hasn't heard of him. I've always wondered if that was from an earlier draft of the screenplay, or the author just made it up.

Probably Vonda McIntyre invented it to make the scene more credible and less of a horrifying violation of basic temporal protocols. McIntyre often tweaked the details of the movies to improve their credibility, for instance correcting TWOK's "Ceti Alpha" to the correct Bayer designation Alpha Ceti, and postulating and exploring a whole new branch of sub-quark physics to make the Genesis effect seem less absurdly magical.

It's worth pointing out that that Mac Classic can't process information as fast as Scotty is putting it in. ;)

^ But this is -Scotty- we're talking about. Surely he could manage to make a Mac outperform itself. :)

Not now, Madeline!

KIRK: "Scotty, you HAVE to make this Macintosh do something useful! And fast!"
SCOTTY: "I can't change the laws of physics, captain!"
