Worst #1 Billboard Hits

How about some of what you feel were the worst songs ever to hit #1 on the Billboard charts? (Any Billboard category).

I'll start off with an easy one. "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, from the movie Thank God It's Friday. It even won an ACADEMY AWARD for Best Song.

Physical-Olivia Newton-John. Sorry, just pathetic.1981.

"I'm Too Sexy" Right Said Fred 1992. Blehh.

I'm not sure if it was released Stateside, but there was a Brit band called Racey, that had a UK No 1 with 'Lay Your Lover On Me'. The horror... the horror... and it was followed up with the even worse 'Some Girls Will'. <shudder>

This led me to formulate the Australis Theory of Pop Music:

All bands, no matter how disliked, will have, buried on their albums, at least two good songs... with the exception of Racey.

Works for me so far.

That's a rich field to chose from, but the one that popped immediately into my head was the dreadful "In the Year 2525" by Zager and Evans, number one for a bewildering six weeks in 1969. When Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon, that was the top song in the country! I have a hard time comprehending it.

A particularly offensive year was 1974. "Seasons in the Sun," "(You're) Having My Baby," "The Streak" and "Kung Fu Fighting" all reached the number one spot that year. I know novelty songs are an easy target, but "The Streak" the number one song in the US? Come on.

Thinking of terrible songs of my youth (what fun!), I remembered Bobby Goldsboro's execrable "Honey," so I looked it up. Sure enough, number one for five weeks in 1968!

"We Built This City" by Starship is the standard response to awful number one songs.

Sadly, I think I liked it back in its day. But I was only a kid..kid's have to be taught what is good and what is evil. :shifty:

Also, "Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. If you like that sickeningly sappy crap...you must be a sugar junkie.

Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is pretty bad.

"I'll Make Love to You"Boyz II Men"I'll Make Love to You"Boyz II Men"I'll Make Love to You"Boyz II Men"I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men, who were a fucking plague on the charts in the mid-90's. Seriously...they sold schmaltzy R&B (generous to call it that) to women like crack to junkies.

OMG, I didn't remember Elvira being that bad of a song but a quick scan of Youtube and :eek::wtf:. I think it had to be the novelty of that deep voice guy.

I was looking for more entries but I'm a bit embarrassed at how few #1 songs I recognize from the past few years.

Novelty? How do you mean? Singing groups like the Oak Ridge Boys, the Statler Brothers, etc., follow a well known formula. Four singers: Lead, tenor, baritone, bass. What's so novel about that?

"Poker Face"Lady Gaga
"My Life Would Suck Without You"Kelly Clarkson
"Touch My Body"Mariah Carey
"Bleeding Love"Leona Lewis
"I Kissed a Girl"Katy Perry
"Disturbia"Rihanna
"Irreplaceable"Beyoncé
"Crank That (Soulja Boy)"Soulja Boy Tell 'Em
"Goodies"Ciara featuring Petey Pablo

I actually like Disturiba (and Poker Face isn't terrible). I think to be fair, I'd have to look at the rock charts anyway. I generally hate the pop music that hits number one and the only reason I tolerate those songs is I've become overly generous with them recently.

If I were to pick from the modern rock hits, these songs suck:

What I've Done - Linkin Park
The Reason - Hoobastank
Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
So Far Away - Staind
Hero - Chad Kroeger (I actually don't remember this song, I just saw who it was by, so I added it).
It's Been Awhile - Staind
Hanging by a Moment - Lifehouse
Butterfly - Crazy Town
Higher - Creed
Every Morning - Sugar Ray

I'll stop there. I don't want to go too far back in time

Anna Molly by Incubis is just boring, but that's not the same thing
