What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a sequel?

Notice, I didn't ask, "What do you think they should do?" but rather what they actually will do.

Will they give in to temptation and tempt fate with a Khan story?

Will they pick another episode to remake?

Will they weave together elements from different episodes into a new story?

Will they bring in characters, events, and aliens from other Star Trek series?

Will they depart from all this and tell a completely new story, with references to the past in purely supporting roles?

There was a recent TrekMovie article that linked to an interview in which they speculated vaguely about the possibilities.

If I had to venture a guess so early on, I think they will include an iconic villain, but I don't think they'll use Khan, except perhaps in a supporting role. I also think they'll bring in a love interest for Kirk.

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

They will have a major test for Kirk. This is what they said about writing Transformers 2:

Sequels are frightening because you really have to come up with a reason to tell a second story that doesn't have to do with the first movie being successful," Kurtzman admits. "So we looked closely at all the sequels we loved growing up, films like The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Superman II and Aliens. The common denominator in all those movies involved a major test for the hero and a bad guy who was truly frightening and who put the hero through the mill. Most importantly, you didn't have to see the previous movie to come into the sequel and like it. Those criteria served as our guide for constructing Revenge of the Fallen."

Well, I know one thing Orci said -- and that was that they won't hold anything out of the second one for the supposed next sequel.

He said the moment you do that, you're hurting the one you're working on.

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I don't know about that, but I suspect that Khan may be kept behind glass that's to be broken in case of Franchise Emergency - that is, they'll develop something original for the next movie and if the success of the series seems to falter at that point they'll resurrect the Man With The Pecs in a hurry for the third movie. ;)

Another female lead is a must, and Kirk will be Kirk, so I'd say this is the one thing that is virtually guaranteed.

If they're really feeling iconoclastic, they can kill Kirk off and make her the captain.

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I'd like two see two things:

1) More on the fate of the Vulcans

2) Romulans.

Go watch Star Trek (2009) then.

I just hope, and I'm probably in a minority, that Khan does not show up. Go with one of the Klingon enemies. What's up with Kor, or Kang, or Koloth?

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

Since all the actors are signed on for 2 sequels (as we all know), its a fair assumption that its simply going to be a continuance of this story (aka kirk and crew - still young).

Personally I would like to see some really well done Klingon (well developed etc. Don't ask me why but I always think back to how the lord of the rings did the orc's)).

To do something on Kahn seems to set your self up for failure - continue the winning streak - go new and different.

So more about the Vulcans and the Romulans would be wrong in a sequel because?
Perhaps the best thing would be to point out this, the first sentence of the opening post:

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I'd guess they'll probably have Klingons in some way, since they're one of the big TOS races that anyone who's got a vague idea of Star Trek knows it a race in it. How they'll be different (if at all) in terms of portrayal is another thing entirely.

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I suspect it will be more of a personal story than the last one. The bad guy(s) will take something from Kirk that really pisses him off, possibly kill off a new love interest. It will end in a narrow and fleeting victory for the crew that can hardly be classed as a victory because everything is so completely fucked.

I actually think there will be two main villains, one that is killed in the film and one that is merely defeated and escapes ready to emerge again in the third film.

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I don't think they'll do a "Wrath of Khan" story, but I do believe they'll love to use Khan in the next movie.

Personally since this version of Kirk has yet to meet Khan, I would update "Space Seed" for the big screen. Show Kirk and Khan's first encounter with each other and how Kirk (once again) maroon Khan on Ceti Alpha Five.

Nope, you're not alone. I'm with ya on that. I wrote over on Trekmovie's talkback that Orci and Kurtzman now have the opportunity to tell the Star Trek story they've always wanted to tell. The universe has been wonderfully reset. They can go anywhere and do anything. There's no need to retread or redo TWOK or "Space Seed."

I want them to go for something original that takes us out to "where no man has gone before." When you think about it, that's what's been promised us by the last scene of the movie. Like the Joker card at the end of Batman Begins.

And I'm okay if they use elements from across the 79 episodes and six movies, like what's been done in the current crop of Superman comics. So long as it isn't a straight remake of an episode or movie.

I'd much prefer a movie that's epic without putting Earth in jeopardy and where the crew is out on the fringes of space, alone.

 I guess it was time for a colorful metaphor. Very nice.

I know it's what you think they'll do rather than what you want but I'm a rule breaker and when I saw this I think that would be a lot of fun....a female villain would be great!!

Geez sometimes you can be a little off putting....I think that's what like you! LOL

A female lead and love interest for Kirk is guaranteed, but your suggestion of a female antagonist/love interest for Kirk is a very intriguing one.

Having Kirk match wits with a seductive woman who is his equal as a tactician and leader would potentially be a great challenge for the character. A female Khan, in a sense. I can't think of a major precedent in trek, and it would be quite interesting and subversive when compared to the standard Kirk-dominated sausage party/ego war.

This is an idea that should actually be mulled over by the writers, in my view ;)

Re: What do you think Orci, Kurtman, et al will decide to do for a seq

I want an original story that does not involve the Borg, Khan, Romulans or Klingons. I suspect Kurtzman and Orci will make that wish come true since no artist wants to just redo the same thing over and over again.

I like the idea of a female antagonist. Will Kirk kill her or will he bone her and then kill her? Either way, it should be a good time at the movies. :techman:
