Name something you learnt while visiting Trekbbs

I've learned that no matter what you post, someone somewhere will hate it.

Me: I like puppies. Puppies are cute.
Someone else: You monstrous bastard! What kind of idiot thinks that way?

Well at least you aren't one of several steaming piles of crap.. which I learnt I was yesterday :D

SPOCKED, you've been married, I'm certain you've heard that by now...

Me, I've most enjoyed learning about the fan films and the art work. Pretty amazing stuff.

I've learned that I never want to moderate anything. Sometimes for fun I'll read the Moderator Actions forum to see what kinds of things people are getting upset about, and I'm glad I don't have to deal with it. (And I'm sure the MA forum is only the tiniest tip of the iceberg.)

I've learned that DS9 is awesome (I didn't bother watching it until I started coming here, besides the odd few episodes on TV).

Similar experience for nuBSG. I laughed at the concept before I came here and people said 'well, actually.. its pretty good'. I watched it, hat eating occurred, and the rest is history.

Here's a little list of some of the things I remember right off the top of my head:

  • Not everybody has the good sense to avoid putting pineapple on pizza.
  • White males are an oppressed minority.
  • Age doesn't matter -post count does.
  • Some people actually liked W.
  • Cola is considered a mixer.
  • LOLcats are a menace.
  • Certain posters don't understand jokes -and what's worse: they don't seem to want to understand them.
  • Some people find catchup to be the root of all evil while others actually cook with it.
  • No matter how horribly made, there's always an audience for a TV-show if it's labelled Science-fiction.

I don't personally agree with a lot of it -It's just a few things I have learnt on the Trek-BBS.

As well as learning about the existence of LOST when I first came here, I later also learned about the thriving fan film phenomenon, the devoted DS9 fanbase, the Crazy Frog, Kingdom of Loathing, Nation States, Instant Messenger, things about American culture including the "I'd Hit That" phenomenon, thread bombs (web macros) and lolcats thanks to this place.

I also learned that there are more of my fellow countrymen here than I realised. Also I discovered that one or two people I'd bumped into in passing (both in real life and online elsewhere) come here too.

Being here also inspired me to improve my avatar creation and photoshop skills.

At one point I was also inspired by this place to create my own website from scratch. It's still there, but hasn't been updated for three years.

But I have also been inspired to start my own forum too. :)

I have learned loads of interesting stuff on the bbs over the years. One of the things I remember learning about, and that made me do more research, was about Spring-heeled Jack, a character from Victorian fokelore, and who I had never heard about. I can't remember which poster mentioned him, though.

I love this bbs for all the different stuff I learn here.

Let's see....I've learned many interesting phrases, and their origins, from the BBS, like:

-side-boobage
-PWNAGE
-LOLcats (including ceiling cat and "can haz cheezberger")
-thread bomb
-"jack-booted thug" :D
-goatse (god....how I wish I could *NOT* know that)
-handy abbreviations like FFS, AFAIK, and my favorite WTF?

I learned about
-Charlie Jade
-all the major spoilers for nuWho.
-that the prefix "nu" drives some people batty
-that many people were growing to be as disappointed with "Heroes" as I was
-every potentially interesting film of the last 3 1/2 years
-what shows are going to be canceled
-that making avatars is FUN.

I learnt about slash fiction on Trekbbs. I had no idea it existed until a discussion about The Two Towers where I mentioned I half expected Legolas and Aragorn to melt into each others arms and kiss when Aragorn finally made it ro Helms' Deep after being given up for dead. Someone afgreed saying "Lord of the Rings is so slashy" and I had to ask what they meant by slashy and they told me.

I have read a lot of slash since then. The strangest slash story I ever read was a Merry/Pippin/Treebeard story.

I've learned if I ever want to post anything here, I better be pretty damned specific, to the very last degree, or people will nitpick till the cows come home. :D

For example I learnt here on TrekBBS that DVDs won't last forever, even if their quality will grant a good usage of at least 15 years, after that time their surface will start deteriorating progressively. And it's even more so for CD-Roms.

I've got tons of CDs that are 20+ years old, none of them have deteriorated :vulcan:
To you and Leroy: I wish I had saved the link to the article that was posted on the BBS, it was several years ago, back in 2003 I think. I only posted what I remember reading in there, I found it to be strange, but hey, the rule that "nothing lasts forever" has to apply to pretty much everything, right? ;)

There are some morons who believe that ALL Canadians say 'aboot'

I also learnt the value of a canon violation.

Nothing lasts forever, but I think your 15 years estimate was a bit short. They're probably going to oxidise eventually though. Records on the other hand.. we've got some old brittle 78 RPMs from 1920s-1940s in perfect condition. Vinyl holds up well too.
