I have a feeling drinking laws in the US are what they are because Americans tend to do a lot more driving than people from other countries. I mean, by the time most Americans turn 16, they have their own car (or are at least sharing their parents' car). The last thing we need are a bunch of teenagers drunk driving.

Yes, I can see why that might be the case, distances are further in America, and your suburban areas are much less densely packed and more sprawling than ours. I've been to plenty of places in Canada and America, and drink driving seems to be endemic in more remote areas.

I thought it was just that you are not allowed to purchase alcohol, you can drink it from age 5 upwards in the UK.

Depending on the state, it's in the party-thrower's best interests to card. A lot of jurisdictions have mandatory jail time for knowingly serving underage people.

I was going to make a point about how maybe if they let people drink when they were younger in the USA they would learn some responsibility by the time they are 21, but then I looked at the way 21 year olds behave in this country and realised it isn't true.
