The Official Cell/Mobile Phone thread!

I'm still using my now three-and-a-half year-old Sanyo 7400. I did switch to a slimmer Sanyo 6650 for about half a year or so after my 7400 flipped out on me - taking it into the shower tends to do that to your phone - but as it's been working great again for the last year I sold the 6650 to my girlfriend, who had an ancient Nokia at the time.

I switched back mainly because the 7400 is faster to text from, the 6650 takes about two seconds to let you press the same key again after touching it once - no, I don't use predictive, so sue me, and the way the menus worked on the 6650 bugged the hell out of me. 90% of the rubberised grip has flaked off the sides by now, but my phone has had a lot of abuse since I bought it - I'm a gas fitter, so it spends most working days in my pants' side pocket, regardless if it's raining, muddy, dusty, whatever - and I intend to keep it until it does finally die, being so much easier to use for me than more modern phones, being used to my old trustworthy one.

I'm in a major dilemma.

In November my cell phone contract expires and i have to cancel it by July.

I don't use my cell that much.. the occasional call, some SMS and that's it. I pay more basic fees than i actually pay to use the service so i was considering cancelling it and getting a prepaid contract which means i only have to pay what i really use and no basic fees.

However there are so many shiny new phones out there and i've seen some good deals for really good (and high priced) phones that come to about what i pay monthly now and the phone is subsidized so i'd pay at most around 100 Euro to get a phone that's worth about 400 or more. The catch is that i'll be in contract for at least another 24 months.

It's not that i can't afford those 25-30 Euros a month but i could cut it down to 5-10 Euros with a prepaid phone.

Any advice?

^ I don't really use my phone much, but I find the whole pre-paid thing annoying. So I have the cheapest contract that I can get. It's 5€ a month plus charges for all the calls/SMSs/data transfer. I do renew my contract every two years and get a shiny new phone, which is how I got my E51 for 10€. ;)

iPhone 3.0 in 3 hours!!! Very excited.

Release of, yes... millions of iPhone users trying to download it at 1 pm EST, might make downloading a bit slow!

Nonetheless, I'm ready to go as well!:techman:

ETA: Downloading as I type - yay!

My mother-in-law loves her 3G so much that she's insisted that my wife and I must have them and get on some sort of family plan.

I wouldn't have bought it for myself, as the last thing I want is another bill, but now that it's coming, I'm looking forward to it.

I'm thinking of getting a new phone soon. I had a Nokia 7650 years ago which broke after a while and I never bothered getting another phone since. I was looking at the Blackberry 8900 and 9500 (I've seen both in person, but haven't really played around with them). I was also looking at the Nokia N97. One thing that's important to me is support for mass storage so I can just drag and drop stuff into it from any computer without having to deal with proprietary software, so I think that rules out the iPhone. I kinda liked the Blackberry 9500, but I've read some bad things about it on the net since then so I was leaning more towards the 8900 seeing as that's getting nothing but glowing reviews from what I've seen.

I'll mainly be using it for MSN/IRC (if there's any clients for it)/email and general internet usage while I'm on the go, shooting quick pictures and listening to music (the latter is quite important), not so much calling and texting. I noticed the 8900 lacks 3G, is that really going to be a problem?

As you can tell, I'm a bit out of the loop with phones!

I've had the Nokia 6500 classic for more then a year now, and I'm not about to switch any time soon. Renewed my plan; chose an LG touchscreen and gave that to my girlfriend.

What I like about this phone:

Sturdy & aesthetically pleasing; simple design with a black, brushed aluminum housing. I love the brushed aluminum inset border of the screen; catches the sunlight really well, like my HiFi reciever. Simple menu, no touch-screen nonsense. Lock your phone and send a message, both with a single button, if you configure it right. Has a digital clock. Don't have to recharge often; even after a year of use I still have nearly a week between recharges. It's also got a double alarm; gotta love that. Easy to check emails. Nice, large and fine LCD screen with a good refresh rate. Is rigid; can survive multiple falls from stairs and being bathed in energy drink. Just clean and let it dry afterward, or it'll get sticky.

What I dislike about this phone:

Glossy black aluminum battery cover; it's a fingerprint-magnet and feels cheap. Too much functionality; I don't use MMS messaging, mobile chat, java applets or any of that crap; if you want to reach someone; call them. If you want to play games, buy a PSP. They should have left the camera out too; if you want to take pictures; use a real camera. I don't like the agenda either; it's too basic for real use. But then again, you should buy a Blackberry or PDA for that. It's got internet, which sucks; you don't want to view the internet on anything smaller then a netbook, at the very least. All that functionality makes the menus crowded, like nearly every other phone out there. And it doesn't have plastic over the screen.; not a real problem in everyday life, if you're careful, but a hassle if you want to clean the corners of the screen.

But still, the pros weigh much heavier then the cons. It's the first phone that does (except for the Samsung X820 I had, who broke completely in half). I'll keep it for a few years yet.
