Is the time right to bring back Space Quest?

With the news from E3 that the Monkey Island franchise is making a long-awaited return, I was wondering if anyone else thinks that it might be time for another comedy-adventure series to make a comeback, the adventures of space-janitor Roger Wilco. I always loved the Space Quest games (especially The Pirates of Pestulon, that's my personal favourite) and I'd love to see them revived.

Seeing as the two seasons of Sam & Max were fairly successful, and that Monkey Island looks poised to follow in their footsteps, I think that a new, episodic Space Quest could definitely work. Anyone else think so, or I am I just being far too optomistic? ;)

I always enjoyed Space Quest back in the day. I'd be for it. They could do some great spoofing of the scifi stuff that has come out in the past ten years or so.

^ Yeah, a lot of SF has happened between now and SQ6. I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that they could work with.

I'm not even sure who owns the rights anymore. My guess is Activision... but then again, they sold that crappy Larry game to Codemasters. Oh well, either way the IP is probably buried under a pile of Guitar Hero guitars and racing games.

Somebody actually put up a flash based version of Space Quest that people could play on line. Only problem was that multiple people are in the game at the same time.

Wouldn't mind playing it again but I'm not sure I'd want to pay for it - games like that do have limited playability becaause once you've completed the game that's it.

Also I recall sometime back there was an updated release with graphics that were on par with the re-release took place but that was still 10 years ago.

I've never played and of the SQ games (and only a little of one of the Kings and Police quest games) but from what I've read of them, seeing the series come back could be fun:)

It will depend on who will make it. The Larry Suit Larry franchise died when got out of the original creators. I fear in the present gaming climate, a similar fate would fall upon Space Quest. I rather have no more Space Quest games, then have crappy ones.

One of the two original creators was working on his own Space Quest fan game... but like all these projects, they tend to just die unfortunately.

From 2000 to 2006, Universal Studios owned Space Quest; and the fan / professional SQ7 project ran afowl of the Universal lawyers who shut them down:

http://sq7.org/status.php

Universal is notoriously lax in their copyright enforcements, but these guys apparently forced Universal's hand by trying to sell the game to them instead of just putting it online.

After Vivendi split off from Universal in 2006 and merged with Activision in 2008, Activision tried to sell the old Sierra stuff, but it's unclear if anyone actually bought the licenses.

Well, the KQ9 guys posted a recent update on Monday saying that they were submitting their game to "Vivendi" for review. I have no idea if they mean Activision or if some portion of Vivendi's game division still exists.

Which leads to the other thing - you would think that KQ9 having a formal agreement with Vivendi would mean that other larger mods could try to go for the same type of deal.

Anyway, after Activision sold Larry to Codemasters... I still have no idea if they includes the entire IP or if it was just the game. I suppose a decent re-release of the old games is out of the question (Telltale games... pleeeease!), but they could be put on Steam or GOG at some point... so it's still kind of important to know who owns these IPs.

Excellent series of games and HIGHLY enjoyable. (I loved V where you "command" a garbage scow) I didn't like VI much, but I'd love to see this game series return in some form.

Would Space Quest be turned into a first-person shooter?

Blech. Why would anyone want to do that?

I think that III is my personal favourite. I'd love if we could get a new game that puts you in the pilot's seat of the Alluminium Mallard again.

And I'll always love IV for how they dealt with time travel—not using years, but having you travel between SQ sequels! It was awesome popping up in Space Quest XII: Vorhaul's Revenge II at the beginning of the game.

I have to agree. I-V were great fun in their day. I especially liked I, IV, and V.
VI had neither of the Two Guys involved, and it shows. The problem is its just not funny. I mean, the Energizer rabbit in STIV was frakking hilarious. I hung it up with VI within an hour of starting it.

If there's no Two Guys from Andromeda involved, I'd probably pass. One of the main elements of Space Quest is its being legitimately funny.

if MI does well *knock on wood* i'm sure the owner of the old sierra games properties will surface

I would love to play another Space Quest game. Until a couple years ago, I had only played a little of SQ5, but then I bought the collection pack and played them all. Good games.

Bring it back. Bring King's Quest back. Bring Police Quest back. Leave Leisure Suit Larry dead.
