What a stupid name. "Buffy".
Yeah, but that's because you are a woman and are supposed to like schmaltzy romances. I'm a guy and people look at me all strange when I mention that I like this episode.
His name was Roland? Okay that's all the reason you need to like him.

Ah, a Stephen King fan. "Sub Rosa" was very atmospheric. Stephen might have liked it.

Salvaging Sub Rosa? Hmm. What put me off about the episode was the fact that this Ronin had been with the family women for centuries. Why couldn't he just been something Bev's nana found back in the day? And perhaps he could have been one of these aliens who actually tried to "suck" life out of you instead of becoming some symbiotic entity getting Beverly all hot and bothered. Though, I liked the kind of narcotic effect he had on her. But I guess I wouldn't have written it so sexually colored myself.
I do like this episode. I think Gates looks beautiful in this episode. I like the atmosphere that's generated. I like the fact that an older woman is getting a bit of action, and I also like the Gothic-ness of it. On the other hand I feel that the colony is a bit of a Scots cliche that I don't care for. I do like Picard's comment on seeing all the Scots mist on his bridge!

I remember the fog rolling in because of a malfunction in the ship's environmental controls, but I don’t remember what Picard said. Don't leave me hanging.

* Loose the references to the grandmother getting it on with said ghost...
* Loose the Doctor not acting at all like a doctor, member of Starfleet, herself, or a decent human being...
* Loose the continuity errors...
* Loose the fact that for...some reason...this alien planet looks like Scotland. Weathered headstones and all...
* Loose the people still speaking with a Scottish accent...for some reason...centuries after they're no longer in Scotland...
Sadly. You're not left with much after that. Throw in some Borg and a singing Data...fill with Troi in a leotard. Roll credits.

Have Beverly Crusher wake up in bed. She hears the shower running...it stops...out walks Jack Crusher. He tells her she had a nightmare, but it's over now...everything is fine.
Series continues with Jack Crusher alive, bringing into doubt the events of the entire series before. The Scottish pigman is part of the crew and his table manners are suprisingly excellent.
Later we reveal that an Wesley altered reality and Picard died in Jack's place. Wesley becomes a recurring villain...even though he indirectly saved the lives of thousands by preventing the Battle of Wolf 359 from ever occuring.

I would get a different actor to play Ronin; I was unimpressed by his performance. Although, I'll admit he did a better job as Ronin than he ever did as Shakaar.
I've always liked this episode I must admit.
I can see why people don't but I thought it was a nice change of pace in terms of the type of story and giving Crusher something to do outside of sickbay. TNG could get a bit conservative in terms of story lines so it was nice to have something completely out of the ordinary.
Plus I thought Gates really through herself into the role and carried it off very well - something that couldn't have been easy.
I'd certainly much rather watch this than any of the other, let's find out more about the crews families episodes, that Season 7 was full of.

If memory serves, he walks out of his ready room, takes one look at the mist and without missing a beat says, "I'll go get my jacket." It's actually one of my favourite TNG moments!
isn't that kind of the point? she's being possesed... it's totally not something she would do, and that's why picard gets suspicious.
i actually didn't mind this episode that much. it was kind of a cool mystery, and it had a different feel from other star treks. wouldn't want to see this kind of thing a lot, but it was nice for one episode.
Does anybody remember that Sub Rosa ties in to Arsenal of Freedom? Beverly talks about her grandmother when she is lying injured after her fall into the weapons cavern. She points out a root to Picard to use on her leg and relates that her grandmother was a healer and helped start a colony. A nice character moment.
I've read a few thousand romances in my life, so I really like Sub Rosa. I'm rewatching TNG at the moment and have been enjoying and am looking forward to some of these episodes that were cut of a different cloth.
