I saved up some money was going to use it to buy a bigger lathe but Wife Unit beat me to the punch and got me a nice big JET 9X36 lathe while I was in the hospital. YAY.

So I took the money I had budgeted and purchaced a piece of gold. Good-sized round rod of 18k gold.

Using the "new" lathe and the big mill and some other metal-working-fu I turned it into a ring with our anniversary dates (first date, proposal and marriage) engraved on the bottom and "Boldly Going... Forward" engraved on top.

Gave it to her last night yada yada only got about an hour's sleep.

What is it with women, shiny yellow metal objects and sappy sentimental mush?

Aww Plec that's so cute, and thoughtful and fancy you having to put up with all that attention afterwards ~ bet that never occured to you

Seriously, that's a really cool gesture :techman:

Oh I was expecting a reaction, not one on that scale. Not complaining though. ;)

*shrug* What else do you do for the woman who buys you a Bridgport and remodels your workshop? She already has every FPS video-game in existence.

Very impressive. A lot of people buy jewelry, but not many buy the raw material and do the forging and engraving themselves. :bolian:

I am reminded of Wayne Newton's words to Clark Griswold in "Vegas Vacation", when he was complimenting Clark on Ellen's many qualities, then shook his hand, gave him the ol' drill-press squeeze and said, "You've got a great woman...don't let her out of your sight."

You got a great woman, Pleco...don't let her out of your sight...

No forging... just turning, boring (fancy drilling) and engraving work.

Gold is very very soft, even alloyed with copper and other metals. It's the metalworking equivalent of warm butter when it comes to machine operations. I understand only pure lead is softer.

As I mentioned elsewhere, forging, in the broad sense, is making something out of raw materials. Like Hephaestus. I think it's an impressive word. :bolian:

Ah but to the Technical among us "forging" is a specific process, different than turning or milling or forming.
