Why didn't Barclay take drugs?

If he takes med, what does that leave Troi to do?
Prescribe the medication and monitor its effects? Except she's not an MD, which I always thought was kind of silly.

I would expect that in the 24th century, genetic science and brain mapping and such have reached a point that tailor-made meds could be made for any individual.

Failing that, Barclay could spend some time in the neural neutralizer.

They made a big deal about how Barclay was too nervous to be around Troi, but that still doesn't explain why he avoided the entire counseling staff.

That's what we need, Barclay curled in a corner of his quarters, discarded meth pipe laying nearby. :p

As far as I know, psychologists don't prescribe medication, - that's done by psychiatrists (who have to train as medical doctors, psychologists don't). Here, at least, they are different quals.

maybe he was on drugs, but they didn't work as he was such a insecure basketcase his insecurities overpowered any drugs

Like I said, she wasn't an MD, although it seems like there should have been one with a mental health background.

The network gets very upset at the mention of "substances", so Barclay became excessively enamoured of the holo deck, i.e. internet.

Umm. A) TNG wasn't on a network. It was syndicated.

B) The internet didn't exsist -well, not in the form it does today or even when it reached public popularity in the mid-90s- when Barclay's first appeared. Hell, it barely "exsisted" when TNG ended.
