Friday Estimate - $1.5 million

At $231 million it would only need another $9 million to surpass STTMP as the highest grossing domestic ST release, even adjusted for inflation.

IIRC, it took ST:TMP about six months in first release to make its money. Of course, in those days it was often only showing in one CBD and one suburban cinema per city.

I first saw TMP at an original single screen theater about 5 years before it was chopped up into 4 smaller screens. Now there's a Walmart there. :(

I just wanted to say that last night I saw 3 or 4 Trek XI ads on TV. Seems they are ramping up the ad campaign again? Or is it just my imagination that there are more ads lately?

I'm still hoping for $250 mil, but even if it doesn't make that number, it is clearly a huge success. Every little bit helps though...and I do hope it makes it to $250 mil. Nice round number.

Don't worry, during a recession $230 mil is the new $250. :techman:

It seems none can give definite domestic numbers for ST:TMP adjusted for 2009 inflation. Mojo says $235 million, westegg.com/inflation says $240.7 million, Box Office says $239.1 million. I think best way is just to calculate how many tickets ST:TMP sold at the box office in 1979.
According to Lee´Movies ST:TMP grossed 82.258 million divided by 2.47* = 33. 303 million tickets sold
According to Mojo ST:TMP grossed 82.258 million divided by 2.51* = 32.771 million tickets sold
It would be interesting to see how many ticket Star Trek sold after it finish it box office run.
(* average ticket price)

33.426 million by the end of the week.

Interesting statistics; thank you.

I think 240 Is still reachable, and we should easily pass by TMP, however 250 now looks out of the question.

We should make about 2.4 Mil during the week next week and about 3 Mil on the weekend give or take, so we should add around 5 Mil for the total of next week, bringing us to around 236-237. We should be able to make the rest while it lingers around.

I don't know Similitude, nine trek movies have tried ,,easily pass,, ST:TMP domestic record and all have failed:). Perhaps expression 'ten time's a charm' should reply here if or probably when Star Trek surpass ST:TMP.

Updated the first post with SBD's numbers, which put Trek at $1.56 million on Friday.

XI is on three IMAX screens here in Indy. Went to the 9:30pm last night and there must have been 150-175 people there...guessing most folks had seen it already and wanted to see it in IMAX before HP and Transformers knocks it out. The people I went with had not seen ST XI, and they waited until it returned to IMAX to catch it.

It's also got 8 showings daily at the multiplex closest to me.

I think we'll reach 240m domestic before we're done.
