Is this board 'cliquey'

One day the Ignored shall rise up from their exile and uh probably stumble around in the lobby trying to get an appointment to plan their attacks.]

If, of course, you guys aren't too busy.
How does next tuesday suit you?

If you don't post like an idiot, you'll be accepted. If you post like an idiot, people will either pretend you aren't even here or gang up on you.

Everyone has their own opinions, which is normal, but I have seen some topics where people are shitting over having different opinions. I have very strong opinions and I stand behind them 100% but I have seen people here degrade each other just because they don't think the same way and then other people randomly jump in and start insulting and join the person/people they agree with and continue to take on the person/people they disagree with.

I can fully understand people disagreeing/agreeing, that is not the issue, the issue is HOW you deal with it. I think that is how a lot of these cliques start up. If everyone just discussed an issue without throwing insults at each other, we wouldn't have any cliques but everyone wants to gang up on somebody to feel like they belong.

Sure. But the sheer number of people here means you don't have to be subject to one clique or another for very long.

Which is exactly why I avoid these so-called discussions. It's not sharing opinions ~ it's ganging up and bullying.

^ I tend to be as non-confrontational here as I am in real life. *shrug* That's how I roll. :D

I think it used to be cliquey, around three or four years ago, but it's not so much anymore.

I agree.

Either it has got more open here, or I've been around so long I no longer care!

How do you recognise a clique?

Well for me, the signs of cliques are threads that if you aren't "in on the joke" you just won't undestand it, and then are made fun of for trying.

Funnily enough, when we get to talking about changes in Misc, what a lot of people say they miss are the lounge war threads. Those are perfect examples of cliques because unless you happen to be of Admiral rank then you are not going to be able to follow what's going on because half the conversation takes place within the lounge, you are at best going to be able to join in with a funny comment - like the new kid sitting on the sidelines.

Me too. It works for me :)

Obviously there are posters who will be bullies and gang up on other posters for some perceived offence, and there will be posters who will continue that attack months and years after the original offence occured. But that's just people being dicks, and with a population as large as the BBS you can't avoid it.

I'd watch out for those people with green names. They're jack-booted bullies.

They even have their own forum where they can plot against everyone. :shifty:

I am actually the opposite. I'm not a mean person in reality but I am very blunt and I basically don't care if you are ten times my size, I'll tell you off anyways if you piss me off.

On the net, I just try to be less confrontational because I don't want people to read my posts and get the wrong impression. That happens elsewhere and people are surprised, once they get to know me, how nice I actually am. I know it's hard to get a reading sometimes on tone because, well, there is no tone in text but a lot of people read it as me being angry for some reason.

This board is not 1/10 a "cliquey" as it used to be, IMHO.

There was a time when it seemed like every other thread was being hijacked by a small group of people posting off-topic in-jokes.

I personally think the environment now is the best it's been in a long time.

4 out of 5 of those so-called cliques were/are open and welcoming for anyone to join in or post with them or do whatever else in the spirit of having a good time. It comes with a little bit of an effort though.
And even if one would be the new kid on the sideline, there have been and are many members reaching out to try and include people in the fun others are having. Besides that, I don't really see the problem of there being, coming and going groups of friends on this grand BBS ... one just can't expect to be able to belong to everything, understand every joke, have your hand held 24/7, you can't expect that in real life, why would one on the internet?

So if someone says that it used to be more fun years back, it most likely means that those he or she had fun with have left for some reason or another.
I had more fun years ago as well, but now most of the people I posted with are gone or just post less, doesn't mean the same fun can't still be found here, I just have to put in the effort to find it. But one is lazy by nature, doesn't mean I mean to condemn the whole of Misc or its denizens.

Digits, you hit the nail on the head. I do think a lot of the more aggressively offensive clique members have disappeared now, and I love it, good riddance. :p Something in the management has changed I think, to crack down on really offensive characters, who walk the line just this side of warnings for spamming and trolling, but still manage to piss everyone off regardless. Their game has been shut down somehow. I would love to know how that was done!

As I was saying, I agree we don't have any single person approaching anywhere near the kind of egoistic, cliquish, bullying mentality, that used to thrive unchecked around these parts a couple or so years ago. Some of those folks seriously needed to see a therapist. I used to shun MISC for precisely this reason for the longest time.

I think I might have derailed this from discussing cliques to talking trolls now though, apologies! Sometimes the two intermingle so seamlessly, it's difficult to tell where one begins and the other ends. :p

EDIT: Thank you for the link, Trampledamage! :)
