"Alan Wake" in-game graphics (2010 release)

The best looking visuals I've seen so far that approximate reality have been from the trailers and walk through in-game tours I've seen of "Alan Wake".
The lighting and atmospheric effects approach a feature film. This is a major shift in quality.
What do you guys think of the in-game visuals from the posted youtube videos so far?

"Crysis" being the next best simulation of the real world.

I think you're overselling them, to be honest. What I saw from E3 didn't look that much better than the recent Alone in the Dark title.

It looks very nice, don't get me wrong... but it's not more technically impressive than the visuals already at the better looking end of the 360's library.

Is it ever going to come out though?

At E3 they said Spring 2010, hopefully they stick to that.

Something interesting that was implied at MS's press conference and now confirmed is that their framing mechanism is emulating a TV show in much the same way that Max Payne's mechanism mimicked a graphic novel. If anything, I think it's a neat way to structure a game.

I thought Alan Wake looked fantastic 3 years ago, now it looks nothing special.

True, I think they may have missed the boat on the wow factor. Hopefully there's a decent game under all the hype.

Yeah, so many games have come along and set the bar higher in the mean time it's hard to get excited about the graphics of the game. Unfortunately up until this point that's all they've been showing us.

graphics 2006-2009 vs Alan Wake

Yeah, so many games have come along and set the bar higher

I saw the 78 screens at Gamespy and Alone in the Dark is entirely at night or lit by artificial lighting and doesn't compare to sunlight and how it interacts with an environment. Okay forget the fact that AITD is coming out this month or even this quarter.

Crysis is on of the 2 or 3 games whose sunlit visuals approached the realism of Alan Wake's in-game graphics with (sun) lighting, and atmospheric effects. Bob The Skutter could you please give us a few examples and links to the Gamespy/youtube page of a few you are speaking of based solely on in-game visuals only. {not gameplay, story, etc.)
Here are a few examples of graphics in the past 2 years that amaze me including mods.
Crysis - The Resort HD Parachute
Crysis relax movie (the resort)
Relax with new HD Crysis maps - better graphic than original
Crysis : True power of the Cryengine 2!! (HD)
Crysis Photorealistic Map HD
Crysis - Direct X 9 vs. Direct X 10 Comparison - HD
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Shadow of Chernobyl Extreme graphics 2
FSX Vista: DX10 Versus DX9

Alone in the Dark came out a year ago, not this year.
And I wasn't saying they set the bar higher than Alan Wake, simply 3 years ago Alan Wake looked stunning, but in the last 3 years games have set the bar a lot higher than they were when Alan Wake teasers first started showing up.

We can't be sure exactly how good Alan Wake looks until we actually get our hands on it, but from what I saw in the E3 videos it didn't look nearly as impressive as it did 3 years back. I'm not saying it doesn't look good, simply that given how good games look now it doesn't seem such a leap.

Okay forget the fact that AITD is coming out this month or even this quarter.

It's been out for a good year now, FYI.

On Alan Wake: remember that the only gameplay footage we've seen so far (that I'm aware of) is from E3, which was a night scene, and as others (and myself) have pointed out, it looked no better than AITD.

The screenshots peppered across the net are a mix of target renders and in-engine stuff that's probably photoshopped. As is the standard practice.

I just don't see what's wowing you so much. The game looks really nice from what we've seen, don't get me wrong - but I'm not seeing anything that sets it so far apart from the current gen crop of titles we already have.

Re: graphics 2006-2009 vs Alan Wake

Sorry I misread the Gamespy website and thought it said June 2009 not June 2008.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (X360) screenshots look close to Alone in the Dark but not Alan Wake. No sun daylight again.

in the last 3 years games have set the bar a lot higher
a few examples you would say have raised this bar?

There's no need to give examples, compare launch titles to the latest releases, it's obvious the bar has been raised in the past 3 years.

Compare FEAR and Condemned to Gears of War 2 and Bioshock.
Crackdown to GTA4, etc.
As I said, I'm not saying Alan Wake doesn't look good, it just looks less impressive now than it did when it was teased years back.

Re: graphics 2006-2009 vs Alan Wake

And, y'know, nobody's slagging off the game.

Just saying that it isn't as impressive now as it was 3 years ago. (I feel this needs repeating...)

an in-house engine developed by Remedy, known as the Alan Wake Engine and incorporates the Havok physics component.

Alan Wake introduces lighting as a new field in game mechanics.

The game’s production costs have exceeded 7 million dollars.

We all know that throwing money at something doesn't make it the best but that's a lot of money.

same location with 3 times of day and lighting in Alan Wake

If you have another game that can show this type of thing please give an example with a link to it.

It is game environments & engines like this that make this idea possible

So what is wowing me? Not the game itself but how the settings and engine can be used to create something else.
