I'd like to buy a 1TB hard disk.. difference between SATA and SATA II?

Re: I'd like to buy a 1GB hard disk.. difference between SATA and SATA

And why replace it?

If theres a spare drive bay and SATA connector on the motherboard just increase your storage.
If his dell is like every dell I've ever owned (which is a considerable amount) there will only be two drive bays.

One thing I would suggest is that the OP buy an HD enclosure and use that other 500 gig hd as an external

Are you just talking dedicated 3.5" bays? I've supported the follow models which all had at least 2 x 5.25 and 2 x 3.5" bays

8230
8300
5150
9250

It all comes down to the size gas you order. But a visit to the Dell website would tell all for the OP in terms of drive bays

Re: I'd like to buy a 1TB hard disk.. difference between SATA and SATA

Hi all,

I bought a Dell Precision desktop a year or so ago, running Windows XP, with two 500GB hard disks. I'd like to replace the non-system hard disk with a 1TB model.

I have my eye on a good Samsung one, but it's advertised as SATA II.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think the current hard disks in my computer are just SATA.

My question is, is this a problem, or will I be able to use a SATA II hard drive in my machine?

Thanks, any help would be really appreciated!

sata drives are rubbish.they usually run in doc mode and are sold under false advertising.who care if the interface speed is 1 ghz 1.5gz or 3 ghz or a gazillion ghz the heads can only read/write so fast and the actualspeed is only 20 to 50 mhz...it is just a con trick.

I'm guessing that your knowledge in this area is probably every bit as accurate as your assertion that modern computers simply aren't capable of parallel processing.

Well, it's funny because I'm pretty certain computers have had that capability for decades, so it's not even as if it's new technology.

There are several factors which would explain why system ram has such bandwidth...

The ad on the webpage says it is a "SATA2 DDR2 HyperDrive5." I just thought it was a neat idea, then I saw their specs and it just seemed sad compared to some of newer flash drives.

Although it may be an older ad, couldn't find a date anywhere...

There is nothing new about ram disk using system... -

I know, I just thought that type of ram drive would deliver better performance, but a wast of ram for most people. I mean I don't see many people suggesting it...

I'm not putting down the poster who put that up, just the people who made the drive. Why use SATA, even flash SSD is getting close to saturating the that bus. I would have thought they would go with something like the Fusion IO, but with ram not flash. And you know, figure out how to get more out of RAM, DD2 has got to be able to give better performance than that.

Yep, talking 3.5s. What type of model are you refering to? Inspirons, Dimensions, XPS? I've never use and XPS before but my Inspirons and Dimensions (I dont have the numbers handy) only had two 3.5 inch bays and two bays for DVD drives and the likes. Believe me if I had the chance to stick a third hard drive in them I would have but I had to settle for using an HD enclosure for the old hard drives that I would remove :(. From what I can gather from the placement of the SD card slots(and judging from what I've seen from the inside of HP desktops) it looks like you would actualy lose one of the 3.5 inch bays for the cables and stuff for the SD cards. I can't say for sure though since I always opt out of that option for my dells

They were all Dimensions (never worked with XPS or Optiplex). The machines didn't have card readers and usually had single optical drives so a 5.25" bay was available and would of just used an adapter kit.

just looked at the specs on the 5150s and they have 2 x 3.5" bays for HDDs and 1 x 3.5" bay for a card reader or floppy (which if empty could possibly be used for a hard disk).
