inFAMOUS. Anybody playing?

I started on easy and went to medium, but I've since bumped it back to easy. Seems like the baddies on the second island are awfully hard to kill. The first mission I tried on the second island was the one where you have to protect the engineer from being killed. Man what a pain in the ass. I finally (after perhaps 20 tries) beat it, but good Lord, what is the point of making stuff so hard? Hell I think that mission was even harder that the first boss battle.

I can already tell I'll never finish this game.

That's my main question regarding a lot of games these days - why make it so hard ?

The audience for a game is so much larger than it was back in the 1980s, which is where this kind of mentality originates.

Games developers should do the kind of audience research Valve does. They track where players are getting stuck, what level they were playing where they gave up playing and did not come back. It is that research, for instance, that caused them to patch Half-Life 2: Episode One because they found people were giving up playing when they were stuck on the part where you have to wait for the lift to arrive in the dark (with all the Zombies attacking you).

Bizarre Creations, also, found that some players were not seeing large amounts of the content (tracks, cars etc) Project Gotham Racing 2 had to offer because progress was too difficult so they left much of the game unlocked when PGR3 arrived.

The answer is to make difficulty settings mean something again. Easy should be easy. A casual player should be able to pick up the game and have as much fun as a hardcore player. In fact, the game should do the work itself. It should adjust itself to make sure the player is having fun. Otherwise, what did they spend their £39.99 for ?

Opened up the 2nd island this afternoon. Holy crap but did the difficutly ramp up or what. I was loving this game and now it's gone from being fun to just downright annoying and frustrating.

Oh well, fun while it last I guess. On to Red Faction.
Which difficulty are you playing on?

I'm just curious, did you play the demo? What was the difficulty of the demo like compared to the game itself?
As much info as possible would be useful, 'cause I wouldn't mind playing the game, but I found the demo quite difficult.

Yeah I played the demo and it was challenging but not impossible. Had the demp been has hard as the second island seems to be based on the first mission I played there, then there's no way I would have ever purchased the game. I'm making a guess that the difficulty setting for the demo was medium.

I actually was able to get through the first island without too much diffculty on medium (there were a few rough spots for me, like guarding the medical crate) but when I opened up the second island, it was like it became a different game. I love this game, the mechanics, the story, and pretty much everything about it. But I can see they've gone out of their way to make it a lot harder as you progress, and if the third island becomes yet again that much more difficult, there's no way in hell I'll finish the game.

You know, I'm glad to hear somebody else ask the question. I thought it was maybe just me. I'll be the first to admit, as regular gamers go, my skill level sucks. But if other people are raising the question, then it's just not me.

It isn't just you. A lot of gamers and a lot of games developers are asking questions about why games go unfinished.

It feeds in to what the industry considers to be its worst enemy - the second hand market. People get bored and frustrated so they sell their games which then get bought by people who would otherwise buy a first hand copy.

Most frustrating is sudden, inconsistent ramp ups in difficulty. I've referred to this game a lot lately, but Wolverine is a perfect example of a good game ruined by this. Specifically, certain sections where Wolverine's abilities are suddenly not available to him, the Sentinel boss battle, some of the jumping puzzles and the Deadpool boss battle.

Well IMHO, that's exactly what happens with this game. When you beat the first boss, it dumps you on the second island and bang, the gang from that island (forget what they're called) is on you. And I could tell right away, they were a LOT harder to kill.

The quesiton I often ask when playing video games is "What kind of sadistic mind came up with that?" referring to whatever hard part of the game I stumble across.

I think you hit the nail on the head about the difficulty settings. They do in fact need to mean something. That way, a variety of players with a variety of skill levels can all enjoy the game.

My questions are, Are you playing smart? And are you upgrading your powers? If you're just standing in the middle of the street trying to shoot off weak bolts, you'll never get anywhere. And absolutely be sure to upgrade your powers. I thought the gangs on the second island were ridiculously difficult to kill... until I maxed out all my shit and started wasting crowds of them left and right.

Well as I said, I know I'm probably below average in skill of the average player so that's part of the problem. That's on me. But I've maxed out all my powers as much as possible so far, and it's still pretty damned challenging for me. As you said, they're "ridiculously difficult to kill." The mission where you have to kill the two gang guys before they kill the engineer was just insane.

I guess it's the sudden and very apparent increase in difficulty that really surprised me.

Oh and another thing that kind of hacked me off, is that I get the second island open, and finally get the bridge down to go back to the neon district. I completed all the side missions so I can have the Neon district 100% controlled. So I'm going around, trying to make sure I have all the blast shards, only to find myself being shot at by Reapers again. So much for "Enemies will not return to a controlled area."

Yeah, i played the whole game on easy mode, since i'm not a so-called hardcore-gamer either...
But the 3rd island is also a bit harder then the 2nd one, including shorter timing on the satelite-uplink missions...
The Conduits on the 2nd island are the most irritating though, they have 2 different kinds even...

I picked up this game on Saturday(last one in Wal-Mart and it had a voucher for the Uncharted 2 Beta), and I've beaten it being Good and I am going for the Platinum. I am 45% there. Still have 100 shards and 4 dead drops to go before I restart the game as Evil.

In regards to the Dustmen on Warren, as long as you have upgraded your powers to the second tier then they should not really be a problem, except for those damned Golems, takes me about 20 Megawatt Hammer bolts to take them down.
If you are still having trouble taking down the Dustmen and First Sons, just aim more carefully and try to get headshots, one headshot normally takes down 50% or so of their health.

Well I went back to down to the "easy" difficulty setting and that seems about right, maybe a shade easy for me. But "medium" was eating my lunch. The other missions I've encounted in Warren haven't seemed quite as bad as the "protect the engineer mission." But the other thing I'm noticing about Warren is that it seems to be a bit harder to climb on the buildings and that's a little disappointing. Sure it adds challenge but IMHO it takes away a lot of the fun.

One thing I will say about it, even though I bitch about the difficulty settings, I will give them credit for being generous with their checkpoints.

Finally broke down and bought a PS3 yesterday and inFamous is one of the games I picked up. My first impressions are that it's a very deep and well thought out storyline, with graphics to match. I'm not real big on how the controls are setup, and playing on anything higher than easy is a chore. I figure I'll play the game to conclusion but it's going to take awhile to finish.

The mission where you have to kill the two gang guys before they kill the engineer was just insane.

I found that mission difficult at first, as well. But with the "precision" power, a headshot will result in electrical arcs zapping enemies that are nearby as well. Wait until the two gang members are close to each other, and nail one of them in the face. This kills one member, and at least stuns the other and should leave you plenty of time to nail the second guy.

They're very good about putting plenty of checkpoints in. There's a few missions that would be extremely annoying without them.

I finished the game with my good character last night. I'm on my second play as an evil character this time. I'm not very far in, but I'm already having more fun with the different powers. The more destructive take on the same powers is fun. I'm also enjoying running around the city without any care for the safety of the people I run across. Being evil is generally a lot more fun already.

Aside from some gripes about the karma system, this has been a really fun game.

It just sounds like it's gone wrong somewhere. That the things that happen that make an average game a great game haven't happened.

Escort missions (a big no no in my book), frequent deaths, random difficulty changes, timed missions (another big no no) just add up to no buy for me.

Well it does have it's share of annoyances, but overall it's a good game. I finally said "F" it and am just playing on "Easy" and that takes care of a lot of my issues. I'm with you one the timed missions, I hate those. I played one of those last night and I bet I tried it at least 20 times before I finally beat it. Had that been in the demo there's no way I would have bought the game.

But I'm glad I did, because as I said, OVERALL the game is a very good game. If you can look past an occaisonal annoying mission here and there, you can have a lot of fun with it.

Speaking of annoyances, can anyone help me get the Dead Drop on top of the prison in Warren? I know exactly where it is, in fact I was on the ledge right below it and could hear the little beeps they play when you're near a dead drop, but I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to jump up to that last final level on the on the prison.

Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
