In TOS episode "Day of the Dove" how many Klingons survived from Kang's ship. I thought there were 38 survivors but Memory Alpha says 37 survived?

All I remember from my recent re-watch is that around 400 of the Enterprise's crewmen were trapped "down below" to make the odds more even, which is a tad confusing by itself.
Perhaps 38 is counting Kang, and 37 is not? Perhaps the latter was given by Kang to Kirk when he was blaming him for the deaths of the rest of his crew?
(Anyone else wish Kang's wife had been played by Barbara Eden, Michael Ansara's real-life wife?

If I remember correctly Scotty reported 392 crew trapped on the lower decks, thus giving both sides an equal number of 38 each, matbe the entity couldn't control nearly 900 people so it caused the deaths of most of Kang's crew!?
The thing I can't figure out is how did the entity affect the Enterprise when it was no where near Beta XII-A?

The question, I think, was "How did the entity affect NCC-1701 just before the episode started, luring the ship to Beta XII, when NCC-1701 originally was nowhere near this planet where the entity resided?"...
That'd depend on how clever the entity was. Perhaps it really sent out a "colony in distress" signal at a Starfleet emergency frequency, instead of just making Uhura believe she had heard such a message. If the entity didn't have a built-in transmitter, it could have goaded the Klingons into sending this false signal.
Or perhaps no message was sent or received, and Kirk approached the planet for some completely innocent reason (say, checking out why a Klingon cruiser's warp trail led there), at which point the entity hit the crew and caused them to think they had come to investigate the destruction of a colony. The Klingons, too, would have originally approached the planet for an innocent reason. But that would rely a bit too much on coincidences.
I'd say the best explanation would be that the entity did have more reach than just a few hundred meters, and was able to move freely at high (perhaps warp) speed. It did a bit of shuttling between the Starfleet and Klingon ships it had spotted nearby in order to lure both to Beta XII, quite possibly a random planet that in no way was the entity's homeworld or even temporary place of residence...

I'd also like to know how the entity caused the damage to Kang's ship, did the entity cause a member of his crew to do something that caused the damage?

That would make the most sense to me, that thirty-eight would include Kang.
Also, it could just be an error. I'd like to imagine Trekkies aren't always right.
As for Barbara Eden, yeah, that would have been kind of awesome. Susan Howard was pretty badass as well though.
I'll agree with that.
That would seem likely. Then again, the entity was able to transmute phasers to swords, so maybe it could also transmute power manifolds to tribbles and damage the ship? I have an easier time with the entity transmuting stuff than faking a distress call or anything like that.

Nah, I just like Barbara Eden, and it would have been cool to see them together. But I agree, Susan Howard was great too.
