Over at Trekmovie, in the Wrath of Khan comic book talkback, Bob Orci has chimed in for opinions on having Khan in the new movie. About halfway down the page.

He's not really stating an opinion one way or the other, but its interesting to hear that Khan is coming up in discussions for the sequel.

Thoughts?

I'm all for it.

I hope not. Why not have new stories?

As long as you’re asking for opinions, Bob, I’d like to see Mirror Universe Khan in the next movie. I hear he’s a really nice guy.

Ooh, I like that. Let Peter David write the story.

From reading through messageboards a large amount of fans seem to think it would be a bad idea, but i couldn't disagree more. It would in no way have to be a rehash of The Wrath of Khan, was TWOK a rehash of space seed? Was The Dark Knight a rehash of Jack Nicholsons joker?

In both instances they came up with an original story for the character and i see no reason why writers couldn't do the same again. Im personally a fan of having two villains in the next movie, if Khan makes an appearance then throw an original villain into the mix as well. Besides, people were initially shaking their heads at the thought of a prequel, especially if they thought it would violate canon. Its possible to have new refreshing stories with old characters, hence why we have the same crew every film.

I just hope they dont turn him into someone whose evil for the sake of being evil, Khan was smooth and sometimes merciful, i never interpreted him as being genocidal like Nero, infact im pretty sure it was mentioned by Spock in space seed that under Khan's dictatorship there was a distinct lack of genocides and mass murder.

I'm in no way saying they can't make an awesome Khan movie. I just don't want to see Khan at all. I'd rather see something totally new and unfamiliar.

BINGO! I mean they have total freedom to do whatever they want in this new universe. Why do new versions of old stories when they could simply make any new story they wanted?!

Yeah, let’s bring the Borg into the mix. Or the Jem Hadar. Or Species 8472. Or all three.

Follow it up with slickly packaged box sets of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, once you’ve gotten the fans interested in these new villains.

Or while we're at it, let's throw the Borg in there too! And how about the Xindi as well.

But seriously, I have a feeling some future Trek movie involved in this new universe will have the Borg in the story. Just got a gut feeling.

Please make Khan a woman this time

Exactly.

I mean, with the Batman reboot, you kind of needed to do a Joker story. A superhero needs an arch-nemesis, and that's what Joker is. To reboot the Batman franchise without a Joker story would have simply been odd.

Khan, while certainly a popular villain, is not Kirk's arch-nemesis. Kirk doesn't have an arch-nemesis. That's not what Star Trek was ever about. It's just a silly and unnecessary idea to bring back an old villain when you don't have to (unlike Joker, which I would say was very necessary given the mythology).

At the end of the day money talks. If they think they can make more money by including Khan, they'll do it. And i think they would make more money out of it, it would create that extra bit of attention in the media.

But since Orci and Kurtzman are creatively deficient....I fully expect to see them rehash everything and make a total idiotic abortion of a plot.

It'll probably make a gajillion dollars, though.

I don't want a nu Star Trek movie waaaaaaaaaaaaa

now its I don't want to have a Khan movie waaaaaaaa

They did good with the movie so I trust them to do better with whatever they chhose with the sequel. Maybe its best to have the next movie new to see Kirk growing into command before a 3rd one could see an experience CAPT take on a man like Kahn.

This confirms my suspicion; OrciKurtzman are out of ideas for a sequel.

Star Trek has always been a TV show, followed by films. Now they have only films with this crew. Furthermore, this being the Star Trek universe (albeit the time-bastardized one), they are restricted. What more can they do?

The best ideas I've seen around or come up with is a unification plot between remaining Vulcans and Romulans with Klingons interfering, or a powerful Orion syndicate threat. But these are difficult things to do in keeping with the snappy, fasting-moving style of the new film.

The new film, it must be said, was lacking in plot, and were it not for the necessary introduction of the crew and their getting to the point they did, then they wouldn't have had much of a film at all. The problem is that to make a film with much more plot means sacrificing the lightning-quick pacing that attracts your average moviegoer. With this in mind, a Khan story might seem to be the best possiblity to follow up, with a mad evil man being mad and evil, but it's hardly original.

I'm sad to say that it looks like the days of complex and cerebral storytelling in Trek may be gone, in favour of CGI bells, whistles, and lens flares. If this is the necessary sacrifice to keep Trek on the go, then maybe it's not worth it.
