Star Trek: The Series

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
The show opens where the movie left off. It would be directed by J.J. Abrams (the same guy who directed the movie) and have a five-year arc, covering the ship's five-year mission. A TV show would give us an opportunity to explore Spock and Uhara's relationship in more detail, develop the Kirk-Spock-McCoy friendship, flesh out the backgrounds of the characters, and take daring risks with the Star Trek universe the way the movie did such as the destruction of Vulcan. Old Spock would make recurring guest appearances on the show.

What do you think? Would a TV show be better than a sequel movie?

I want a TV series and more movies. I'm piggy! :)

The new characters have such potential for development that just relegating them to a mere couple hours every two years would be frustrating.

Kirk and Uhura both strike me as very changed characters, while still true to the originals - I like the things the writers have chosen to change but want to learn more.

Kirk is less mature and more wild than I'd expect Kirk Prime to be at that age. He needs to grow into the compassionate leader who cared deeply about his crew, his ship, and his ideals and also the savvy guy who knew when to control his impulses.

Uhura is more assertive and self-confident, less ladylike and meek, than Uhura Prime. That's certainly going to propel her into a more central role, leaving aside her relationship with Spock.

Spock's situation has changed so utterly that he's going to have a much different and more dramatic character arc than Spock Prime. I just hope he can get his impish sense of humor back someday. :(

They will only make more movies for now. The movies would most likely make them more money than a TV show ever would. Plus I think a movie fan base and TV show base is VERY different. The show would cost an insane amount and there just won't be the fans to watch it every week.

The movies will make them the same amount of $$ with or without the TV show (if anything, the movies might do a bit better because of the slight PR boost from TV; the reverse effect would be more pronounced). That's an apples and oranges comparison.

The real question is, would Trek on TV make more or less $$ than whatever else the studio would make, or the network would air? TV shows compete with other TV shows, not with movies.

If I'm not wrong, CBS holds the television rights to Star Trek while it was Paramount who owns the movie rights. So any television series would depend on CBS and they're the ones who rightly (or wrongly) canceled Enterprise, so while I'm a little optimistic I would not hold my breath either.

Given that the last Trek series was a dismal failure and the last movie a huge success, I'm gonna guess Paramount is going to stick with what works.

Not necessarily. It's arguable that DS9+VOY followed by ENT with TNG movies running concurrently helped lead to Trek overload. Paramount is going to be very careful not to let that happen again. A good idea, IMO.

Stop being so greedy, folks. :) You're going to get a new movie. Be happy with that.

They'd make the decision like any other corporation would make the decision: is it going to make them more money than whatever else they could spend the resources on?

But I do know this for sure: CBS might produce a Trek series but certainly would not air it. CBS is the most inappropriate network for Trek because the audience is all wrong (maybe the CW would be worse :rommie:). They'd be much smarter to license it to Fox or NBC. Basic cable I also an option I guess, but I think that's too small potatoes for Trek.

You're telling starving people they're being greedy for wanting a crumb of bread more often than every two years? :p
