female Starfleet captain/officer questions

So whilst the female Captain in TVH was the first one we, the audience, actually saw, there must surely have been female captains before then.

Please could anyone help with this one?
I'm looking for canon but hey if novels, video games, or comic books had a female Captain please speak up.

There was a female captain that Kirk met at the end of one of the missions in the PC game Star Trek: Judgment Rites. Her name was Marta Harding.

The Wormhole thanks. I have not been a fan of TNG and was asking for more information on this thread about Trek canon.

Your info has helped me fill in the holes.

Picard orders it put on speakers.
"This is Captain Garrett of the starship Enterprise to any Federation ship. We have been attacked by Romulan warships and require immediate assistance.

Captain Chantal R. Zaheva was the commanding officer of the starship USS Brattain until her death in 2367.

female Starfleet captain

What about Captain Tryla Scott of the starship Renegade?
Captain Tryla Scott was a Human Starfleet officer and commanding officer of the USS Renegade. By the mid-24th century, she was the youngest Starfleet officer to attain the rank of captain, which made her something of a legend.

Picard meets with Walker and two other captains, Tryla Scott and Rixx

there's a female captain in Vanguard: Harbinger set in 2265: Hallie Gannon of the USS Bombay. Later, the Iranian-born Muslim Atish Katami becomes captain of the USS Endeavour in 2265 in Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind. how inclusive is she?

There was a female captain on DS9 in "The Sound of Her Voice",

Memory Alpha shows she was only an officer.
the crew hear a female Starfleet officer's voice.
"...I am a citizen of the United Federation of Planets and a Starfleet officer."
If she were the captain she would have said so.
She did:
LISA'S VOICE: My name's Lisa Cusak. Until a couple of days ago, I was the commanding officer of the Olympia.
SISKO: The Olympia...
LISA'S VOICE: We left the Federation over eight years ago for a long-range exploration of the Beta Quadrant.
SISKO: What happened to your ship, captain?

Also, from Memory Alpha:
Cusak was later given command of the USS Olympia. The ship left the Federation in 2363 on a mission to explore the Beta Quadrant.

ST: First Contact (1996)
After Admiral Hayes gives Picard the news of the Borg crossing into Federation space then Picard has the bridge communications tuned to a certain Starfleet Frequency on the radio during the battle with the Borg and we hear the sounds of female captains giving orders.

ST: Voyager (1995- 2001)
This is the first Star Trek series to feature a female captain in the main cast.

On Enterprise set in the 22nd century T'Pol as science officer on NX-01 was given the Bridge a number of times. "Regeneration" was such an episode.

Two questions:
1. Were the sounds of female captains giving orders on the radio in ST:First Contact a nod to Voyager since it was made during season 1 of Voyager?

2. When were the first female Federation Starfleet officers and captain according to canon?

WTF..

I think he was just trying to point out how little female captains are really referenced beyond Voyager, but I could be wrong about that.

Truthfully, I never think about it much. As long as they're awesome as hell, I don't really care what gender they are.

I was.
In STII:TWOK we see Kirk tell Saavik she has the con when Kirk, McCoy, & Spock goto Kirk's room to view the Genesis project file. That shows how female officers were in authority but it is not often we have seen female captains and hence this thread...
