Anyone else Prefer Pine to Shatner

The funniest part is Pine played Kirk nothing like Shatner...

While the others were closer to their TOS counterparts..

That says it all.

I think you could get with with Urban and Quinto playing close to the originals. With Pine/Kirk it would of skated too close to send-up than would of been good for the movie.

William Shatner will always be the James T. Kirk, just like Sean Connery will always be the James Bond. Chris Pine is a good actor and all, but he will never be the James T. Kirk, just another guy trying to play him.

Right at the current moment, I do prefer Chris to Bill. He's exciting, and I am still getting familiar with him. But there's nobody like Bill.

As much as I totally loved Chris in the new movie, nothing will replace Shatner for me in the TOS.

So I like them both, but for different reasons.

Well, Shatner is Kirk, but Pine does a nice version of Kirk. Both are very likable, funny and charming, but Pine lacks Shatner's steely-eyed, cool, calm commanding presence.

Yes, but as been has said before, this is fresh out of the Academy Kirk. TOS 1st season Kirk was, well, a more seasoned officer -experienced beginning to hone the Kirk of legend. Pine's Kirk is still a "infant" captain IYKWIM.

Plus both actors are products of their respective times. Either way I loved both.

Actually, I liked Shatner early in TOS better than I liked him later. He had his moments in the movies, but he was best in the first year of TOS.

And there was quite a bit of first-year Kirk in Pine's performance. Not necessarily an imitation or carbon copy, rather something Pine was able to capture from that early Kirk/Shatner performance.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. At least Pine looks set to continue showing alien girls that Earth thing called kissing. :)

When I've seen more of Pine in Trek and other things, then I might be able to say. The Shat has done Shakespeare, I think he can summon up subtlety when required.

Subtlety was definitely Shatner's strong point. When the episode
required subtlety, e.g., City on the Edge of Forever, then Shatner
was at his best. But when an episode allowed for broader emotion,
e.g. The Enemy Within, then Shatner couldn't hold himself back. He
chewed the scenery like a ravenous T Rex. Partly a sign of the times
perhaps, but also an integral part of Shatner's acting style, which I
can't say I fully appreciated, then or now.

He will always be the original James T. Kirk, and I liked him in the
role, but I never loved the character the way I loved both Spock
and McCoy. That is what Chris Pine brings to the role for me (as
someone else also said in a previous post). He made me not only
reappreciate Kirk but love the character as portrayed by Pine. It
is a great piece of natural acting, without overplaying it as Bill
Shatner sometimes did, IMO.

I also have to say I never found William Shatner all that attractive
even in TOS (though other female fans certainly did). And seeing
the picture of Kirk from TOS posted above only reinforces that
opinion. Shatner was a bit pudgy even in his 30's and not all that
well-defined muscularly. But Chris Pine is another matter. He is
*very* well-defined (no pudge anywhere on that body!); in fact
he's downright HOT. (I say this only in my capacity as an objective
female observer, BTW.);)

William Shatner had his day, and he created an icon. But now it
is Chris Pine's turn, and I for one am anxiously awaiting his next
appearance as James Kirk.

Pine has redefined the role of Kirk for the 21st Century...he is also a much superior actor. Yet another reason NOT to have the bloated Shatner in the sequel....

I loved this movie, but the Shat remains superhuman.

Chris Pine did a great job, though, and I look forward to seeing more.

Oh I'm sorry, how many emmys and golden globes has Chris Pine won for his acting? I must have missed that somewhere...

I live by two constants, Sean Connery is James Bond and William Shatner Is James T Kirk. That said, it's good to see that the character can transcend into other talented actors. How else can our heroes live forever?

I know how controversial this question is, but I wanted to ask it anyway. I saw the movie for the second time yesterday and one of the things I was thinking was how much I really loved the casting of Chris Pine as Kirk. I remember he was on one of the night shows when the movie came out (I think it was Letterman) and he was talking about the flack he got from people just because he was cast as the character Shatner created. After watching the movie, I can't wait to see Pine in the role again, probably moreso than any other character.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shatner but it seemed like the Shatner from movies changed from the Shatner of the series and I preferred the Shatner of the movies.

Well you gotta realize that people change over time. The series was made in the 60's and the movies mainly in the 80's... that's a 15-20 year time difference, so people's looks will change.

I did like Pine's Kirk for this new "series" but I also like Shatner's only because he's like the bomb of Trek.

I don't know about anyone else, but I actually liked Shatner in the movies. I also like Denny Crane so I dunno.

That said, I love Pine's Kirk. I haven't really watched TOS recently, or regularly ever. So I can't compare him to TOS Kirk. A lot of people I know who've seen STXI love Pine's Kirk as well. He is VERY good-looking. Very well-cast. Who'd have thought an actor from "Just My Luck" with Lindsay Lohan would be such a great Capt. Kirk?

Do you think we'll ever see Pine play Adm. Kirk 20 years in the future? LOL.

This is a bit tangental, but:

when I was first reading here I went back and read through posts from a year ago. I was impressed y'all didn't freak out more about Pine. Pretty boy actor from The Princess Diaries 2 and a dumb Lindsay Lohan movie, and very little else, and people were still giving him a chance.

:techman:

And, yes, I prefer Pine. But like someone upthread said, I think part of it is the evolution of acting over the years. Shatner's acting wasn't near as epicly hammy once upon a time.

Shatner did have to watch his weight in 60s (he'd slim down between seasons but would gradually regain it as shooting went along) but it was also compounded by wearing lifts to make himself taller (Shatner's claimed height was 5'11 but in reality it wasn't) which affected his posture and hence the belly became more obvious.
