I agree and I've seen ENT first season.
I loved the first season, too. ^^
I find the problem with Season 1 is that it's very uneven, with good stuff like Babel & Duet mixing with real dogs - does ANYONE actually like If wishes were horses? - & several crucial characters (Bashir & Dax most obviously) have yet to find the moulds we learn to expect from them. There's also an odd absence in the Commander's chair; as the writers seem to be struggling to find out who Sisko really is. Looking back on it from series 2 onwards is probably a lot easier than experiencing it first up, though
I did, it gave some insights to the characters early on in the show.
I adore Duet and actually somewhat like Babel (I'm kind of fascinated by the idea of the aphasia virus, enjoy the father/son scenes with Sisko and Jake and love the fact that Quark more or less saves the whole station), but man, I've never heard anyone lump those two episodes together. As far as I'm concerned they are not even in the same league. Why do you love Babel so much?
Yes, I do. Like Zeppster I enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the crew's inner longings and wishes. It's a neat little sci-fi concept that's somehow reminiscent of Lem's great Solaris. And the episode blessed us with a lot of funny imagery – like the scene in my avatar.
I also liked the 1st season. I think you appreciate it more after watching the entire show through. Then it is fun looking back and seeing how much everybody evolved as the show went on.
Also if you hate DS9's 1st season you must hate all of TNG because they are so similar in tone and content. I don't see that as a bad thing, but I am glad that DS9 found it's own voice as time went on.

I wouldn't say i love it - i just think it's a well-made episode in the old TNG vein, with the first glimpses of the ensemble story-telling that DS9 would make it's own. Direction is tight, as is the scripting. Not sure why it isn't more highly regarded by the Niners; but again (as with Season 2 - http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=85996 ) it may be the part TNG/part DS9 transition element that makes the hardcore undervalue it
You won't convince me on If wishes were horses, though. Fascination in series 3 did the same thing better
i didn't think the first and second seasons of DS9 were that bad... compare them to s1 and s2 of TNG... i love TNG, but those two seasons were not so amazing.... i think if i had started watching tng in the first season (one of my teachers four years ago was a TNGer who showed us all the best episodes, and he got me hooked on it) i never would've kept going. ds9 managed to hook me from the beginning.
I simply cannot rate DS9 seasons by seasons, as far as I'm concerned it's a great whole and I don't mind season 1 being a part of it. I liked it when I first viewed it, and I haven't changed my mind since then. There are mistakes and hesitations, but it was still strong enough to build the rest on these foundations.
I still have yet to find anything redeeming about season seven.

I'm sorry but season 7 was just bad story telling at it's worst. What You Leave Behind was awful.
There's nothing wrong with having that opinion, but surely you realise that your claim that season 7 has no redeeming qualities was an overstatement. Even tough you may not like the general direction of the season, there is still some great episodes in there.
And I still don't see any redeeming values in it.
Okay, but I think that Treachery and Inter Arma were fantastic episodes, both in my top ten.
This is quite interesting to me. I've been meaning to get into DS9 again, as I missed quite a bit of the series, and I've been hearing a lot about how I should just skip the first couple of seasons entirely. I wasn't planning to actually do that, but all of this discussion still gives me some varied perspectives from long-time fans to kick around.

DS9's first season is very solid - especially when compared with the other Trek shows (TOS possibily excluded). It is true that the 'real action' did not start until later, but this season is jammed-packed with important character development, and should not be missed, IMO. And I'm not just talking about the most named great episodes like Emissary, Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets. There is some important character development in several of the episodes, IMO.
I am much more disillusioned with those who skip the early seasons completely in an attempt to 'get to the good stuff'. Because frankly, when they do that, they in fact actually MISS alot of 'the good stuff', and only end up cheating themseleves.
