Does anyone else think that Paramount missed a great opportunity to release the Countdown story not as a comic but instead as an animated direct to DVD movie a couple of months before Trek XI? It has been done in the past. Specifically I am thinking of the Animatrix and how well done that was done and how it was released to DVD before the Matrix sequels to get people excited and tell some back story. I just think it would have been cool to have Countdown as an animation instead of a comic. And now that the movie is already out I doubt they will go back and do it. Do you think they missed out on a golden opportunity to not only hype the movie and have a better way to tell a back story but also on a chance to sell a ton of DVDs/ Bluerays of an animated movie version of Countdown?

Yes, absolutely.

First, I've thought a new Trek animated series could work for a while now, so an animated miniseries or movie would have been a good first step in that direction.

Second, it would have been a marvelous extension of the marketing juggernaut. We'd (hopefully) also get to hear the TNG actors at least reprising their voice roles, so that might be a good "gateway" for TNG/DS9/VGR fans to getting interested in the movie. It might similarly help by indirectly appealing to TAS fans - many of which appear to be TOS-oriented fans.

There's already one animated Trek series on apparently-indefinite hold. I'm not sure I'd hold my breath waiting for an animated "Countdown series", even if it's something I'd most likely watch were it to be produced. If the network continues to be uninterested in Trek on TV, that leaves webcasts, perhaps, but that would almost have to be a project for someone who wanted simply to do it, not anyone who expected to make a buck at it.

Comics are much cheaper to make than animated films, and I doubt that Paramount actually had that much faith in the new film as they are boasting about now after it's a huge success.

Oh I did not mean release it as an ongoing series. I meant it would have been cool if they had released the whole story as an animation on one DVD or Blueray a couple of months before the movie came out instead of having the comics.
