So, Sam Raimi's much anticipated return to horror arrives in theaters tomorrow in the form of DRAG ME TO HELL, starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long. I was able to catch an advance screening of the film here in Chicago last week so below is a mini-review, sans spoilers.

The film is a riot. For those thinking the Spider-Man films softened Raimi to any degree you're mistaken. This has all of the gruesome, fantastically horrifying yet concurrently hilarious horror of his Evil Dead films. Unlike the "torture porn" phase that has taken over contemporary horror as of late, DRAG ME TO HELL is a rollicking good time, full of Raimi's now trademark gross out humor.

Basically, I recommend this film to anyone who is either a fan of horror, Raimi and his Evil Dead films or anyone just wanting to have a good time at the cinema.

Yeah, I was just thinking if this was more suited for the Sci-Fi and Fantasy forum. Oh, well.

Hopefully I will see it tomorrow. I am excited for Raimi to return to horror, for I could take or leave his Spider-Man films. Would prefer another film with Ash, but we can't be too picky.

I hear he's prepping another Evil Dead film but with his attention diverted back to Spider-Man for the time being I'm not so sure of its chances of ever being made.

    And thanks, Spiff.

I'm so glad to see a good review of this--I'm going tomorrow and am looking forward to it so much! I actually was texting a friend last weekend about going to see it last Friday, I was so excited. Oops. Hey, a little enthusiasm never hurt anybody!

I don't usually see movies on opening day because my wife likes to avoid the crowds.

Luckily, she has no interest in seeing this one, so I can go tomorrow. :D

Word of a remake of Evil Dead and/or a fourth film in the series with Bruce Campbell as Ash has come time and time again. With the Spider-Man 4 production gearing up (and quite possibly Spider-Man 5) I share your skepticism as to if either will ever be made. Still, I hope they will.

Glad to know you liked it JA. Despite our tastes varying at times I'm curious to see this.
This part I think seals it if your like me and so over 'torture porn' or it was never appealing to you.
Looking forward to this movie as counter programming to UP & Museum 2.

Yeah, I could never get into the Saw or Hostel films. I'm glad Sam Raimi is back in the game to deliver a true "jump out of your seats" horror film.

I got into an advanced screenin' here in Austin, courtesy of Ain't It Cool News...

...and walked out about an hour into it. I would have left sooner, but it was at one of the Alamo Drafthouse theaters, so I had to wait for my server to bring the check for my burger & fries.

I may try to make it to a showing of this this weekend, but I doubt I'll have the time.

I'll trust the 94% Tomatometer rating and the glowing reviews from horror sites more than the guy who said The Office has never made him laugh.

I'm going to try and see it this weekend. I'm not reading this whole thread though as I don't even know the premise of the film yet and i'm hoping to keep it that way.

I'm probably in a minority here, but I think the 3 spiderman movies have represented a creative low for Raimi. They were pretty good, better than most Superhero movies, of which I am not a particular fan, but generally pretty bland generic hollywood fare.

I'm hoping for the return of Raimi's gleeful bastardness that was all over the Evil Dead movies, Crimewave and Darkman.
