Didn't like it? Still, you have to admit that...

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

There were things I LIKED in this movie. I didn't hate the movie, I was just disappointed in it.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

You smiled a bit when "Spock Prime" first showed up.

McCoy's [introductory] rants about space travel.

Chekov's scene/troubles talking to the Enterprise computer.

Most of those made me smile. And yes, there were some great moments. This last one still pisses me off though. The whole "w" for "v" thing is essentially an ethic slur against Russians and it's lasted the entire 40+ years of the Trek franchise. This one the one thing I most hoped would go the way of the dodo.

There is no "w" sound in the Russian language. It is replete with "v"s. Vladimir. Vladivostock. Hell, Chekov's full name has three "v"s that he can pronounce perfectly every time (Pavel Andreievich Chekov). Anyone else catch that. Three seconds after he gives Captain Pike his full name, then Pike repeats it back to him (six "v"s between them), then Chekow suddenly can't form a sound found three times in his own name.

Someone somewhere suggested that Chekov's missuse of the V and W comes from an overcompensation of how "V" is used in English.

Regardless. It doesn't matter if it is "real" or not. Chekov DID mix his "V's" and "W's" so it's logical that this Chekov would too.

Which would be bizarre as the Russian "v" is identical to the English "v". If anything, it's more prevalent in Russian.

TOS Scotty was an alcoholic. ST11 Scotty isn't (as yet).

TOS Spock was in near complete control of his emotions. ST 11 Spock was barely in control a lot of the time.
TOS Kirk was a confident man who was willing to listen and make hard decisions based on his subordinates' suggestions. ST11 Kirk was an arrogant bastard who did everything possible to push people out of his way because he knew he was right.

TOS Sulu was a cautious man. ST11 Sulu was all to willing to volunteer as an "expert combatant" because he's a fencer.

TOS Uhura barely had a role, but her mere presence was a statement. ST11 Uhura is a cheap love interest that is barely more interesting than the parody of her from Galaxy Quest.

TOS Chekov, the perpetually proud Russin FORGETS HOW TO PRONOUNCE PARTS OF HIS OWN NAME. ST11 Chekov is just like TOS Chekov.

Sure. In a reboot, where nearly everything changes, this is one of the few that remains the same. (I refuse to use a roll-eyes emote because I think they're childish, but this would be the perfect place for one.)

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

ST09 Scotty is at least a full decade younger.

TOS Spock was in near complete control of his emotions. ST 11 Spock was barely in control a lot of the time.

ST09 Spock is at least a full decade younger than his TOS counterpart. This Spock is closer to the Spock seen in "The Cage." Who smiled when he saw alien flowers in said episode.

TOS Kirk was a confident man who was willing to listen and make hard decisions based on his subordinates' suggestions. ST11 Kirk was an arrogant bastard who did everything possible to push people out of his way because he knew he was right.

TOS Kirk had the benifit of having a solid role model in a father figure. ST09 Kirk has no such benifit and further, yes, is a full decade younger than his TOS counterpart.

TOS Sulu was a cautious man. ST11 Sulu was all to willing to volunteer as an "expert combatant" because he's a fencer.

Full decade younger, yadda, yadda.

TOS Uhura barely had a role, but her mere presence was a statement. ST11 Uhura is a cheap love interest that is barely more interesting than the parody of her from Galaxy Quest.

Having a black woman be a major cast member is hardly a "statement" in 2009. So they had to give her something to do.

Slow down and read that again. I'll wait.

TOS Uhura... her mere presence was a statement. FULL STOP. PERIOD. NEW SENTENCE AND NEXT THOUGHT. ST11 Uhura is a cheap love interest...

Agreed, ST11's Uhura is not a statement (save perhaps of how vapid the film is).

But TOS Uhura was a huge statement. The much cited conversation between Nichelle Nichols and Martin Luther King about same is more than enough for me, thanks.

I understood what you first posted.

MY point was that her presence in 2009 wouldn't be a statement, like it was in 1966. Thus they had to give her something to do.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

ST11 Uhura is a cheap love interest...

Who happened to take an instrumental part in the plot using her professional skills and spent most of her scenes exhibiting confidence and competence in her line of work and personal life, with just two scenes of love-interest-ness.

This was discussed to death in the "feminist review" thread so I'm not going to rehash it here.

NEXT!

The fact that it was a pretty damned good movie aside, I'm just glad to have Kirk and Spock back. It's good to see that they are as eternal as Batman, James Bond and Obi Wan Kenobi.

I wonder how this movie would have been received if all the rest of the series had not happened and this was the very first Star Trek anything. I know, hypothetical musings of alternative timelines are not popular.

She happened to catch a communication about the Romulan attack on Klingon ships off screen. Having that intel was vital for Kirk to convince Pike, sure. But in the very scene that she's asked about her competence, i.e. speaking Romulan, her very next line is, "I'm sorry sir, but I'm not detecting any communications, Vulcan or Romulan." Or something to that effect. Yeah, she's vital to the movie.

That's your opinion, not a fact.

I generally liked the movie; but it had some poorly thought out scenes. McCoy was the best character in the film, bar none. The new Spock was pretty good too. Kirk was just too immature. I wouldn't lend my car to him, much less a starship worth billions of credits....he's a brat. And its diffucult to really be a gusher about the film when you can't respect the lead character.

And translated it. How many languages have you learned in your life? Have you ever translated a message from one language to another? How about a message garbled by interstellar transmission distances with extensive signal disruption that you had to correct for? In a single night, for no academic credit, because you care about what you do?

It's not a matter of overhearing someone's conversation in the next cubicle over.

Re: Haters, even you have to admit that:

Scotty never was an alcoholic. McCoy drank more than he did by far.

ST09 Spock is at least a full decade younger than his TOS counterpart. This Spock is closer to the Spock seen in "The Cage." Who smiled when he saw alien flowers in said episode.

Smiling in The Cage is a long, long, ways away that what Spock is depicted as in this film. He's gone through 18 or 20 years of Vulcan training as a yound man. Half human or not, there is no reason for the wild displays of emotion that he showed. Sulu was more reserved than Spock. JJ should have toned him down a bit.

TOS Kirk had the benifit of having a solid role model in a father figure. ST09 Kirk has no such benifit and further, yes, is a full decade younger than his TOS counterpart..

In any case, Kirk in this film shows the maturity level of where a 13 year old should be. The man isn't mature enough to babysit kids, much less be given complete control of the fleet flagship.
