I nearly destroyed something beautiful today

Zulu Romeo

World Famous Starship Captain
Admiral
I was driving down to Oxford today, and as I was about to get on the motorway, there were a few road workforce men on the dual carriageway, with grass trimming equipment, trimming down the overgrowing grass alongside the road and in the central reservation. Suddenly a rabbit was there right in the middle of my lane, sitting there, literally frozen. I had to swerve to try and avoid it, almost hitting a tanker on the lane to my left. I glanced at the rear view mirrors and fortunately the little wabbit was safe. :adore: The red Ford behind me merely passed over the creature, who ducked in between the wheels, and I guess was safe again. I never saw it again afterwards, though. :(

I did have thoughts about stopping and picking the little animal and nursing it back to health, "Local Hero" style. (Of course, I'd then take steps to ensure my future innkeeper didn't happen upon it later and transform it into rabbit pie or something. :guffaw:)

Funnily enough, as I reached my destination I did also see a hedgehog on the road, to the side, motionless but unflattened.

Anyone else almost destroy something beautiful today?

Thanks to an excess amount of draft beer last night I destroyed a beautifully cleaned porcelain throne this morning at the office.

That bottle of beer I was opening, that slipped out of my hands and shattered... does that count?
Yes it does. While you actually destroyed that beautiful bottle of beer, you nearly destroyed your beautiful liver. :bolian:
I think my liver can take it after the abuse I gave it in my late teens 2 pints is nothing... Then again, I wasn't taking a potentially liver damaging drug back then... I guess that'd make it about even...

I see the area has had its effect on you.

Off your topic, slightly, and probably an unpopular belief with most readers here, but I've retrained myself mentally to never swerve for small animals in the road. Hitting them will probably kill them, and at speed, you may also damage your car too. But it's FAR safer to hit the animal than swerve into traffic and risk killing yourself/others as a result. Brake for them, sure. But swerve to avoid? Really, really, really dangerous. After a close shave doing exactly this some years ago, I now never do it. As a result, I've certainly caused roadkill a couple of time, but I - and other drivers - haven't been involved in an accident as a result.

I'm going to say that I wish I had swerved when I hit that deer a few years ago. Probably would have missed her completely. Instead, I caused a lot of damage to my car and probably broke the deer's leg.

You are totally correct. But I now have to hate you for killing fuzzy little cute animals...

Well, a deer's not a small animal, unless it's very young.

A fully-grown deer is large enough to hit a car, instead of vice versa. That happened to my dad and his wife a few years ago. They were driving along a dirt road in Saskatchewan at night, minding their own business, when BAM! A deer came charging up out of the ditch and ploughed into the passenger side. Took out the side mirror and did quite a bit of damage to the door.

Fortunately, Saskatchewan Government Insurance has no deductible for damage caused by wildlife.

Lest people think Dad is some kind of heartless Bambi-slayer, we were driving in the foothills of the Rockies one time, near Hinton, Alberta, when he braked suddenly: a young deer had wandered out onto the highway. A strange sort of standoff ensued: we waited for the deer to move on, but it just stood there looking at us. Finally, Dad honked at it, and scared it off the road.

So, nothing beautiful was destroyed that day.

(He said, in a rather lame attempt to get back on topic)

^ PETA hippies will be on your ass in no time.

I'll run them over too... :p :D

Yeah, exactly, a big deer I'd swerve for. I did specify small animals in my post.

Look at me, I'm Holdfast. I expect people to read every word in my posts. Blah blah blah. :p

My stomach almost disowned me when I decided to snack on Synder's Jalapeno pretzel pieces. :borg:

I just read this and went "Huh? What does this have to do with murdering fuzzy animals?"

Then I remembered what the thread was actually about.
