I was driving down to Oxford today, and as I was about to get on the motorway, there were a few road workforce men on the dual carriageway, with grass trimming equipment, trimming down the overgrowing grass alongside the road and in the central reservation. Suddenly a rabbit was there right in the middle of my lane, sitting there, literally frozen. I had to swerve to try and avoid it, almost hitting a tanker on the lane to my left. I glanced at the rear view mirrors and fortunately the little wabbit was safe.
The red Ford behind me merely passed over the creature, who ducked in between the wheels, and I guess was safe again. I never saw it again afterwards, though.
I did have thoughts about stopping and picking the little animal and nursing it back to health, "Local Hero" style. (Of course, I'd then take steps to ensure my future innkeeper didn't happen upon it later and transform it into rabbit pie or something.
)
Funnily enough, as I reached my destination I did also see a hedgehog on the road, to the side, motionless but unflattened.
Anyone else almost destroy something beautiful today?
