Rare "Cage" pics!

These are very cool.

A couple of the shots of Number One are bordering on art.

You know, it never occurred to me until just now, looking at those pics, how much the big rock formation on the Talous IV set reminds me of the Vasquez Rock formation.

I wonder if that was deliberate, since it was a very famous location for filming that surely the director/set designers were aware of, and maybe were inspired by?

Merciful Mogg! The "printout" crewperson (the young lady sitting at the science station when they retrieve the hardcopy report), she can actually smile! :techman: (See shot "ST 206" in the second to last jpeg.)

Sincerely,

Bill

Cool stuff, thanks for posting. The shots showing construction and such are fascinating. I like the original bridge also. Though I can see how Kirk's bridge, with its higher contrasts, might have looked better in B&W. And since color broadcast was fairly new, that might account for the overall saturation and bright colors of TOS.
I like both looks, but the original was, I think, a higher concept. No super-short skirts. Mensa-woman for XO. "Too cerebral", indeed. I suppose the issues with STXI were a mold that was cast here: when the original pilot was rejected for something with more action, more sex appeal, and "dumbed down" somewhat. The struggle between these two poles was there from its inception.

Those are amazing photos! If I were filthy stinking rich, then I'd try to purchase them, assuming they're for sale.

Actually, I was thinking that the relatively spare sets lend themselves to B&W photography. Lit properly, the show could have been especially atmospheric, somewhat like the first (and best) season of Lost in Space.

Wow, those pictures are so cool, thanks for posting. It would be very interesting to see the original in b/w!!

Interesting seeing Trek in black and white, I wonder how it would have played out like that.
When I first started watching Star Trek in 1970 I watched it on a b&w television and it works just fine. I've often made Pike era Photoshop pics in b&w for a vintage look.

I disagree with what someone said upthread that the show was dumbed down afterward. I simply think they injected more action and sex appeal. The notion that NBC rejected Number One as too cerebral and inappropriate is a myth. The truth was NBC was wary of the fact that Majel Barrett was known to be Roddenberry's extramarital girlfriend and the obvious favouritism didn't sit well with them. It would be interesting to know if they ever considered just recasting the role rather than simply eliminating it.

At any rate GR eventually got his Number One in TNG with Jonathan Frakes. And we even got to see him in a skirt in "Angel One"

Number One is pretty hot here. There are times I wish we could've gotten more of her, but I think her smarts were written into Spock and I wouldn't want that changed in any way.

Put in your The Cage DVD. Play with the color settings on your TV.

Boom.

Trekker, boom.

I might try it sometime, color in black and white is not always the same as black and white as intended though. A lot of stuff that was originally black and white takes more advantage of contrast and shadows than just turning the color off.

There were more pics apparently. Here's the whole lot as best as I know.

Some of those shots are so cool you'd think they could be scenes from episodes never aired. The fourth sheet from the bottom on the upper right corner has an overhead shot of the bridge that is similar to shots we occasionally saw during TOS. Very cool.

Yes the over head shots of the bridge are very nice.

Shame these aren't available in hi-res.

I agree.

I really like the look of the Cage era bridge for the most part. I think it looks more high-tech than the TOS era version, which I also like very much. I think the Cage era version has more of a conceptual/evolutionary link to the TMP refit bridge.

In some respects looking at this design and colouring scheme it seems GR and company were selling a concept as much as a TV series idea. I even like those gooseneck viewers because it gives it some added visual texture.

I certainly like this better than how the bridge looked in WNMHGB. I didn't much care for that colour scheme.
