"Museum" comedy beats "Terminator" at box office (Reuters)

Star Trek is already a great success on its own terms. Everything past this point is gravy. But some where seemingly expecting it to break all time records. Which is not going to happen. So now there is a war of expectations with each side willing to twist current facts to suit their agenda.

And that's not logical. Star Trek has done well as a Star Trek movie (though I see the resemblance in name only), but it's not going to be the history-breaking mega-hit that some have claimed it to be.

That's my point. The movie has already won the battle it needed to. So seemingly there is no point in looking at the Box Office returns. Yet debate about the the current numbers show some want more and some think its not really a success yet.

When I see it for the 3rd time tomorrow THAT will make it a success! :p;)

Of course Star Trek going to be out of the top 5 within a week or two. The days when films stayed near the top of the box office for weeks and weeks on end are long gone. Only a few rare breakout monster hits manage that these days.

Star Trek is a hugely successful commercial rejuvenation of a formerly moribund franchise, and a very successful film in its own right apart from that. The fact that it isn't as huge as some other franchises (especially in international box office) doesn't diminish that. And most of the comments I've seen on the box office threads have been pretty level-headed. I haven't seen anyone claim it's going to take the crown as the biggest film of the year in worldwide box office. If there have been a few overly hyped comments they'd be in the minority.

^And who have claimed that? Isn't Abram's Trek already the highest grossing of the Trek films?

It is until adjusted for inflation.
Even adjusting for ticket price inflation, it's going to be either the highest grossing Trek film ever or come a close second. The target it has to beat to take that crown is around $240 million domestic.

I'd say Star Trek will end up as the #3 or #4 film of the summer in domestic box office, with Transformers 2, Harry Potter 6 and Up being the main contenders to fill the rest of the top spots. There's also Ice Age 3, but I think that'll come in below the aforementioned films.

UP is not getting good advance word...but POTTER is a force as is TRANSFORMERS...TREK at number three would be great...and if the next TREK movie does get done in time for 2011? It is going to be very tough summer that year according to releases that have been announced already..

All I know is ST did far, far better than I would have expected. The franchise's future is at least secure with the performance of this latest film--good thing too, because if it was a failure, that coupled with Enterprise's cancellation could have led to a long, long time before Trek made any further appearance in a film or tv format (barring fan films).

Great post and so prophetic. I wish all the haters of this movie understood, as you do, the importance of selling tickets. I have seen their 'plot' suggestions as to how to have made this movie better and I just kiss the ground and thank the fates that none of them are any where near deciding anything that comes next for TREK. SOME of them are just clueless.

Museum 2 was a terrible, terrible movie. It's easily one of the worst movies in the last couple decades. Terminator 4 was an embarrassment to the franchise, but it never reached Museum 2's level of pure badness.

Most of what I've heard about the advance word on Up is that it's very positive, but there are concerns that it might be tougher than most Pixar films to market. Of course the same was said of Ratatouille and it ended up making $206 million domestic (on the low end for a Pixar film) and $621 million worldwide (a smashing success). Star Trek stands a very good chance of grossing more than Up domestically and taking the #3 spot, but never count Pixar out.

Bullshit, Up has been getting fantastic advance word and opened the Cannes Film Festival. Much of the early buzz has said this is probably Pixar's most heart-felt production they've ever made and to "bring Kleenex".

Star Trek is well on the way to becoming the biggest movie of the summer. Barring competition from entries later on...

Pixar's Up and Transformers say hello.

I bolded the parts you missed.

I doubt "Up" will do Star Trek's numbers.

Transformers *might.*

The two statements together make no sense. Trek will be the biggest movie of the summer...if we ignore anything else that comes out after it that might actually bring in more money. :wtf:

And I suggest you look up Pixar's U.S. movie grosses, which are pretty damn lofty. Trek's doing good, but Pixar has the Disney and kids audience which should never be underestimated.

Posting again, now with their whole feature film resume...

WALL-E: $223,808,164
Ratatouille:
$206,445,654
Cars:
$244,082,982
The Incredibles:
$261,441,092
Finding Nemo: $339,714,978
Monsters, Inc.:
$255,873,250
Toy Story 2:
$245,852,179
A Bug's Life:
$162,798,565
Toy Story:
$191,796,233

So, not adjusted for inflation, the last time a Pixar film made less than $200 mil. domestic was 1998. Yeah, Pixar should really be worried.

Pixar has no need to be worried. I'm sure Up will go over $200 million domestic. But Star Trek could still take the #3 domestic spot. It'll likely be between Star Trek and Up in my opinion for the #3 and #4 domestic spots for the summer, with Transformers 2 #1 and Harry Potter 6 #2. Up will make more than Star Trek in worldwide box office, though.

Indeed, Pixar has great international numbers too.

What are the films for 2011?

What are the films for 2011?

Spider-Man 4, The Bear and the Bow and Cars 2 (Pixar), Thor, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, untitled Star Trek sequel and Tron 2 to name a few that have been officially set by the studio.

What are the films for 2011?
The current summer 2011 schedule:

May 6 - Spider-Man 4

May 20 - Thor

June 3 - Kung Fu Panda 2

June 17 - Green Lantern

June 24 - Cars 2

July 1 - Transformers 3

July 15 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II

July 22 - The First Avenger: Captain America

Michael Bay wants to push TF 3 back to summer 2012, though, and it'll be entirely unsurprising if that does indeed happen.
