Why all the secrecy during production? (spoilers)

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

Abrams and his cohorts didn't want us to realize too soon just how bad the movie sucked.

LOL .. he probably wouldn't be too worry about you and the ten or so people who think the movie sucks.

He probably will laugh all the way to the bank and paramount probably will ask him to make another one.

Yeah, given the numbers and the critics reviews (look at it compared to ANY other film presently on rottentomatoes.com) and see how "terrible" most people thought it was.

Incidentally, in reference to the destruction of Vulcan being no more important than the destruction of Aalderan, I have to say that for those of us old enough to remember Star Wars in the theater, that was a pretty BIG plot moment. I don't recall anyone in the theater in the '70s saying, "Meh, I've seen better!"

Re the OP--why the hell does everyone hate the Fifth Element all of a sudden? It was a good movie. <_<

Well, for one it wasn't nihilistic, preachy, transhumanist or full of itself, so that disqualifies it from being a good scifi flick.

In order to rate anything there has to be a frame of reference. Good compared to what? Bad compared to what? Critics rate movies based on how they compare to similar films released recently. Films that are part of a franchise get compared to other films in that franchise. In effect critics used Nemesis and Insurrection as the frame of reference for rating "Star Trek". Let's face it, that's not a very high standard.

It was a plot device put in the film to show the power of the Death Star. Knowing Alderan get's destroyed prior to seeing Star Wars for the first time does not spoiled the story. Just like knowing Vulcan gets destroyed prior to seeing Star Trek does not spoil the story.

It was schlock. If you like schlock that's fine, but Star Trek has never been Schlock....until now.

But that's not even the point. The point is why does schlock have to be kept secret? It's like trying to keep "Snakes on a plane" a secret.

Heretic! It's Star Trek produced within the period of 1964-1979!
Rubbish! Proper Trek is about the missions of the UUS ENterprise commanded by Chris Pike (acept no imitations). I couldn't believe that the producers of the new movie finally bowed to public demand and brought him back, and then wrote him out again..

Infidels! All infidels! It's the FIRST THREE MINUTES of 'The Cage'... minus the first 30 seconds! Unbelievers!

And Gene Roddenberry's novel of ST:TMP

And the original outline for 'Andromeda' arrrgh...

Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as...

Actually, Pike is returning for the sequel.

But it's not the same if he's not the captain! The boycott starts here!
;)
