European recommendations?

So the (soon to be) wife and I will be taking our honeymoon in August. We'll have three weeks and be backpacking for the most part.

At this point the only places we're 100% committed visiting are Rome and Cinque Terre. We're also thinking about Croatia (probably Dubrovnik), Prague and Southern Germany, although a part of me wants to go the other way and see the south of France and wrap up in Amsterdam

Any thoughts/recommendations regarding the places I've mentioned or any other suggested destinations would be appreciated!

You could try the various Alps (Swiss, Austrian, etc.) The Tyrol region in western Austria is very nice.

Amsterdam is very overrated.

My girlfriend did the backpacking thing about a dozen years ago. She really loved Belgium, the Czech Republic, and France. Although she mainly loved France because she is an art buff. Germany she didn't care for mainly because of the food. She says Belgium is a real unknown jewel in Europe. Oh she also loved Venice, but again mainly because she knew so much about the art and history of the city. Oh and if you are going to Croatia stay out of the hostels, I saw a movie about that once:eek::eek:

Not particularly original, but I would say Venice. Yeah, it's hyper-expensive and choked full of tourist, but it's still Venice.

Your route could be Cinque Terre --> Rome --> Venice --> Croatia --> Bohemia --> Bavaria.

You could also slip a couple of days at Florence between Cinque Terre and Rome.

Prague is wonderful: you could stroll in the Staré Město (Old City) for weeks and always find something new and beautiful at every step. Vienna, on the other hand, is overrated IMO.

If you are using trains, beware that in Italy punctuality is an alien concept.

Those are all beautiful places, my only recommendation is not to plan on visiting too many different locations; three weeks is not much and Europe is going nowhere - you can always come back some other time. ;)

How exciting for you and your lady. I'm rather offended you haven't put London in there somewhere - and the UK has it's own riviera...
