Am I the only person that likes 'lens-flare'?

The lens flares sucked. They were annoying as hell. So was the shaky cam. Style this movie had in spades, but the shaky cam and lens flares were part of it.

I loved the use of lens flares but I do agree with Overgeeked about the shaky camera shots. In some scenes, like the entire Kelvin segment and all the fast-paced action shots, it was appropriate, but in some cases where a character was just sitting down and giving orders or in close-up shots it was a bit distracting. I LOVED the camera pan and rotation behind Spock at the Vulcan Academy.

I think this topic will become less contentious as more people experience multiple viewings. Repeated exposure definitely has a massive accumulating effect. You know, when you get to that familiar point with a movie where you can just sit back and pick out neat little details you were too busy following the story line before to notice; And then suddenly you realize YOU @%#$& CAN'T!! I feel confident the DVD will settle things down a bit. Hell, the blu-ray alone should be a grand slam.

If I wasn't a regular here I wouldn't know what all the fuss was about. I probably wouldn't even notice them.

But seeing as I do, they don't bother me. They don't distract my enjoyment of the film in the slightest, and I think they give it a certain style.

It's not like it's the first film with lens-flares anyway. Plenty of flicks have had them. Bladerunner has quite a few if I remember correctly - I don't see it getting roasted for it.

I noticed the lens flares and found them annoying. they are useless and overdone and distracting.

Please, JJ, next movie does NOT need more cowbells.

cubbie i like the avatar..

for some reason the ones that were so annoying in the spock, kirk scotty scene i almost didnt notice in the threate.

The first time I saw the movie I kept asking myself is space really that bright?
And lens flares reminded me of the in game movies on my video game. But those in game scenes are far in between, and it is designed to test my vid card.

But if you place all those bright lights in the movie while I was trying to pick out the details of the set really annoyed me.

Am I the only person who doesn't know what lens flare is? I think I've read 3 threads tonight that have mentioned it, so I finally googled the term. How it was used in this movie?

Obviously I didn't notice it even after two viewings, so I'm sure I would only notice its use in future viewings of this movie if I start looking for it. I guess I could say I think that lens flare was well used or it would have caught my attention.

I liked it a lot. Made me really feel like I was there... sorta.
By that I mean, you know how movies in the 70's did everything practically when it came to visual effects, they had lens flare. Then in the 80's to now, there is never any lens flare, just super detailed models. The lens flare makes me feel like there really is a working phaser, Enterprise, etc.

Exactly! I felt like I was on the ship, that I was actually there, that what I was seeing was real.
