texting while driving.

I admit that I am guilty of this. I know it is wrong and just plain dumb and I even almost totaled my car, twice, now that I think about it, because I was texting while driving. Well, actually, the last time I saw answering the phone, not texting, but same difference really. After the last time I have stopped doing it, for the most part.

As much as my coolness amazes me sometimes, I can fully admit that my stupidity is also a wonder to behold at times. :S

I make it a point to cut off people either yapping on the phone or playing with that damned thing while driving. They're a hazard.

Yeah, make em crash, that'll teach them for doing something that might make them crash. You SHOW them what a hazard they are by causing a pile up they could have avoided if they just weren't being so damned irresponsible.

I swear, some people really don't need to be in charge of a car. :vulcan:

Damned straight. They should have their attention focused on driving and not anything else.

Unbelievable. You genuinely believe that somebody else acting like an irresponsible idiot gives you the right to do exactly the same and put everybody else on the road at risk.

You're every bit as irresponsible and dangerous as those you are "teaching".

Why are you bothering to ask him for some kind of reasonable well thought out action? Are you new here?

Someone employed as a trolly conductor in Boston recently caused a major trolley accident while texting. Automatic prison time should be given.

This is one of my HUGEST pet peeves. Well, actually, what I refer to as "distracted driving", which includes everything from putting on makeup, shaving, reading the newspaper, you name it.

I grew up in Oregon, a state that takes its driving and rules of the road very seriously. And, if I do say so myself, [rainman] I'm and excellent driver. [/rainman]

Then I moved to Boston, which is pretty universally known as having some of the "worst", most aggressive drivers in the country. And I sort of had to re-learn how to drive, incorporating my basic driving skills, with ultra-defensive skills just to stay alive on may daily commute.

I drive a mere 15 miles to work each way every day of the week, including about half of that on a major interstate highway. And every single day I see people reading the newspaper on their steeringwheel, typing on their laptops, men using electric razors, tons of people talking on the phone and texting, and many of them "multitasking" by doing more than one of these things at the same time while driving at least 75 miles per hour in heavy traffic. There is one woman who I used to see regularly on my commute who would be driving, talking on her cell phone which she had cradled between her ear and shoulder, smoking a cigarette and/or drinking coffee and/or putting on mascara while driving ... every time I saw her!!! On one particularly eggregious day I actually called the police because she was weaving all over the highway and I had seen her nearly cause 2 accidents. The response was essentially, "yeah, so?"

It's a miracle to me that there aren't more accidents and fatalities from this.

In the past 5 years alone, there have been several severe reported accidents (including many fatalities) on the road and rail due to people texting while driving, including the recent incident mentioned above.

We have had bills before our state legislature several times over the past few years to outlaw this kind of behavior, yet we were never able to get it passed (despite huge public outcry and letter writing campaigns by people like me). There are just too many people who don't want their "toys" taken away or their "personal freedoms infringed upon." It makes me crazy!!! :klingon:

To paraphrase a line of SCOTUS decisions, a person's individual liberties may be limited to the extent that those liberties are likely to result in injury or death to others. There are studies showing that "distracted driving" is more prevalent than driving under the influence and more likely to result in injury, yet we in this state can't seem to find the wherewithall to regulate it. :scream:

Huff-huff-huff-puff-puff-puff.

Sorry, this one gets me pretty worked up. Which is saying something, because (for those of you who don't know me) I'm a pretty even-keeled guy and hard to "ruffle".

This has always been an issue for me, but became even more important after I was in a near head-on collission recently. The other driver heading in the opposite direction hit black ice and spun into my lane, which isn't necessarily her fault, I understand. However, one of the people who stopped after the accident to help told me that she had just passed him at an excessive speed and that he had seen her with her head bent sideways cradling a cell phone between her ear and shoulder. I can't help wondering if we could have avoided the accident if she'd been paying closer attention to her driving and less to her phone conversation.

To those of you whose states (and/or countries) have laws regulating this, good on ya! I'm going to keep pushing for it here and hope I don't get killed by someone texting and driving before that happens.

Thanks for raising this topic. I think it needs to be kept in the forefront of peoples' conciousness to help get something done about it.

*steps off of soapbox* :o

I can outdrive you and any of the other people here bitching about my cutting off people who text and use the cell phone. After almost getting clipped by inattentive drivers I got fed up and won't allow it to happen. Don't gripe at me because someone else is irresponsible. Driving is a full time activity.

I've had a carload of college kids play games with me on the Interstate while I had a trailer. The third time they were going to play "speed up" and pin me behind a truck was when I cut over and dropped that trailer right in front of them. I'm betting all four of them had skidmarks in their drawers, after which they made it a point to speed up (after I made my pass), flip me off, and then put the pedal to the floor. The other trucks with trailers were happy with what I did.

Deal with it.

I think it's igorant to multi-task in the car in the first place! Your first priority while driving is PAYING ATTENTION to the road!!!! Hell, it's hard enough to drink a soda and drive for me!! That's why I play it safe! I personally am glad they are putting a law out against that. People are so dumb when it comes to their cellphones nowadays. There's more to life than texting. Plus it costs lots of $$ if you do it several times!

*Shrug* I've texted before without taking my eyes off the road. There is no need sacrifice your multitasking abilities while driving on an interstate with very little traffic.

Eh. I have unlimited texting. I still don't do it more than 20 times a month, if that.

In fact, I'm more than a little irritated with friends who communicate with me exclusively through text messages.

Either way, I'm guilty of texting while driving from time to time. Never on a highway or in heavy traffic, though. Just at stop lights.

I don't care how good a driver you think you are, it's the arrogant self-righteousness of drivers who think that they can control such situations that makes them the most dangerous of the lot.

You do not have the right to take risks with the lives of other road users. If somebody is driving irresponsibly, get away from them. That is the beginning and the end of the issue.

I swear, some people really don't need to be in charge of a car. :vulcan:

Yes.

The people who choose to stare at their phone and text on it while driving. If they were paying attention they'd be able to react to someone cutting them off. Since they're NOT paying attention and have their nose stuck in a blackberry screen they deserve to get into a crash.

You understand that a crash often involves people who weren't at fault. You do get that right?! They ain't gonna crash into a pile of marshmallows.

Go to Wikipedia and check out the 2008 Chatsworth Train Collision. That dumbshit was texting while driving the train, and ran a red light, crashing into a parked train and killing himself and two dozen others. He was also planning on letting a teenaged foamer (slang term for train fanatics) drive the Metrolink later that evening.

As a locomotive engineer, in the aftermath of this incident, both my employer and the Federal Railroad Administration (the portion of the Department of Transportation that governs our movement) passed several rule changes that prohibit the use of cell phones and other electronic devices on the trains. If the railroad catches you, you're "fired" for 60 days (permanently if you've violated before), and if the FRA catches you, it's a $5,000 fine.

And we can't even swerve off the rails.

And how would you feel if you tried to prove a point by cutting them off, only to have them crash into, say, a school bus filled with little kids?

Try having a water balloon at hand. Or, better yet, a maple syrup balloon. If they're busy texting while driving, they won't even see you throw it, and you'll get the satisfaction of shaking them up without the risk to your own vehicle (and, hopefully, other vehicles). And a maple syrup balloon in the summer provides merriment long afterwards.

Or, and here's a crazy thought: You could not decide to play robocop, drop back, and leave them to be an enormous twat on their own. If they're a real danger, take a licence plate, pull over, and call the cops. Road rage 'revenge' responses to other people's bad driving achieves nothing productive and causes collisions. You're the good careful driver, take responsibility for your safety and others' and do what the idiot won't do - drop back and let it go.
