A thought about Delta Vega

Although I wish they had chosen another name instead of making a nod to WNMHGB into a silly coincidence, I was thinking about the film's Delta Vega and its place in the Vulcan system.

Since Vulcan was clearly visible from the surface of Delta Vega, it might be practical to think that this is the same stellar body seen in the theatrical release of The Motion Picture and in the Animated "Yesteryear".

We all know that the "moon" was edited out of TMP because of Spock's statement in "The Man Trap" that Vulcan has no moon. But what if this body is actually Vulcan's sister planet which shares a close orbit? Because of the movie Fan fic has long speculated this, often giving it the name T'khut (which apparently translates as "watcher" in the Vulcan language). Its close orbit contributing to Vulcan's volcanoes and other tectonic stresses.

The word "Vega" comes from the Arabic word for "falling". Maybe Humans, seeing how close Delta Vega/T'khut seems to come to Vulcan, coined the word because it seemed to be calling out of the sky towards them. The Delta part may mean that its the fourth planet in the Vulcan system.

As a side thought - since Vulcan "has no moon", maybe Delta Vega does. This could explain how Tuvok was born on the "Vulcanis Lunar Colony". Being so close in proximity, its is "logical" to conclude that the Vulcans colonized the nearest inhabitable body from their home world.

It still beggars the question why humans would be naming a planetoid in the Vulcan system, when the Vulcans were flying through space centuries before. But yeah, it's likely the best we're gonna get.

How about... Humans called it Delta Vega, Vulcans called it T'khut, and then at some point in the original timeline, the Vulcans said "will you stop using this dipshit name for our sister planet?"

Reading about this on the news feed, some stellar cartographer working for a mining consortium decides to re-use the name for this distant planetoid they just found, with these huge lithium deposits. Mostly to annoy the Vulcan geologist on the ship.

And so, Delta Vega B is born.

I'm only willing to go to these lengths because I know their heart was in the right place. Sort of like when a well meaning roommate cleans up your apartment and moves everything around.

I just pretend that the escape pod computer actually said Dalta Vrega and it's the next planet along in the Vulcan system that orbits the sun on an elliptical orbit that only bring it close to Vulcan on very rare occasions.

On the matter of Delta Vega.... Artistic license works for me.

A thousand rationalizations can be given. It's not really an important matter.

One could say that Delta Vega is the Vulcan analogue of Nibiru. Once it came close to Vulcan, doom came as predicted thousands of years ago by Vulcan Mayas:p

Don't get me started on Nibiru, please. ;)

I still remember your last thread on the subject :p

I personally will choose to believe that Nero left a Holographic Projector or Some Such Nonsense that was showing Spock what he ought not grok.

From very far away.

I know, it's funny what bugs us. The Star Trek Starcharts book was one of my faves, I guess that's the sort of thing that makes my head itch. While say, Red matter, I could care less about.

Sounds good to me. :techman:

Seriously people, I wanna know if it does indeed say Delta Vega 5.
If it does then there's no problems cos it's just the 5th planet in the galaxy with the name Delta Vega.

Isn't the polarilla just a subspecies of selat?

And the big red thing just Cloverfield's kin?

So why was their a fed outpost there and why was Kirk expected to stay in his pod until rescue when the outpost had no idea he was there?

Probably just an automated msg that the pod always says regardless, supposedly someone SHOULD have come but they didn't.

OR

Scotty did go to the pod but found it empty and just went back to the outpost.

Maybe the polarilla was actually a starfleet rescue hound like a St. Bernard. Xenophobic Kirk just assumed it was going to rip him to pieces.
